Thank you as usual for the combined wisdom I am persuaded that taking down the furled Genoa to set up a storm jib or using a sleeved jib over the furled sail are neither good ideas
This leaves using a well furled Genoa with the barber hauler as a reasonable compromise between safety and function or arranging to install a stay for the storm jib - the latter is obviously a bigger deal but perhaps functionally better. How much luff sag would occur using this set up with the spinnaker halyard to tension the luff ? Is this a real issue?
With the main a 3rd or 4 th reef would seem to be a reasonable option instead of a trysl . What proportion of the main should be reefed away? My reading suggests a max of 40% of the mains area should remain after putting in the final reef. Is this the general agreement?
When I've been reading about this I wonder whether the balance of the storm set up is significantly affected by hull shape/ keel form. The modern Jeanneau hull is not a traditional long keel cruising yacht - does this invalidate the sorts of advice one sees in the usual books about heavy weather tactics?

Does anyone have experience with storm jibs that sleeve over the genoa eg Hyde , e-sails, Gale etc? Are they a good idea or is it best to take down the genoa and run up a hanked storm jib?

Thanks thats same device as mine - as per the labels on the device. does all that data come up within network menus on your system? in Zeus touch menu settings, network, sources under echo my transducer type is noted as unknown and generic with no other specification - is this the same in yours or do you have device specific settings there? elsewhere in my system (under devices ) it lists the dst200 as the echo device

I have an airmar triducer factory installed with a Zeus touch in my SO379 I have been having some echo issues so looked at set up In the Zeus set ups it requests echo type - mine is selected as transducer type Unknown / generic There is however a long list of echo types from generic types listed by freq eg 50 Hz, 200 Hz etc and more specific types I have not got an airmar manual I have looked on airmar web site and am none the wiser Has anyone else got the same set up, if so what are their echo settings

I have been considering adding a bowsprit to fly an asymmetric on my 379 The Seldon looks good but gets in the way of the anchor locker which would seem to be a nuisance if one wanted to leave the sail furled while temporarily anchored it would seem that the 379 + 10 is because jeanneau recognises the advantage of the bowsprit and the need to make it so that the anchor is always accesible is anyone aware of if it is possible to buy the bowsprit from jeanneau that is used on the 389 and retrofit it - or is there a better option

The physical install looks good Davits can be removed easily or rotated Bases attached to transom are only "invasive" aspect and look ok but are hard to see easily on the photo I can't recall what tge installer did inside Arohas transom if anything and haven't got the ability to get back on board at present to double check / photo The attachment is much as the lower aspect of the push pit which is installed I can do a blow up of that area if useful tho the image I've got here with me isn't great at that level of detail

As an aside I was going to get custom made davits fabricated These were cheaper and the fabricator stated that he would get some for his boat after seeing mine!

I have no problems with using the swimming platform with a canoe on the Davits but the dinghy gets on the way of using swim platform - it lowers ok but is hard to use except from the side of the platform In boarding I can bring the dinghy up to the swim platform and board then raise the dinghy on the davits with the platform still in the water I often at anchor leave the dinghy floating connected to one davit so have easy access to dinghy and also full use of the platform

I cant get near Aroha at present as have a child in hospital The link www.forespar.com/products/boat-nova-davit-lift.shtml has reasonable images and the davits have neatly integrated with the pushpit The davits are able to be rotated or removed easily i carry a walker bay 8 and a hobie inflatable on them with ease - supposed to cope ok with a 350lb load a utube video is also quite good ive seen a posted comment on the web re rusting of these davits but have not seen any on mine

Thanks Sitara The flywire sounds a great idea, secure and without any obvious problem. I'll go down that route I think.
It seems there are a few areas where ( by trial and error) we may find that valuables are able to "hide"permanently - I may have lost the dandruff shampoo but the idea of losing glasses, rings etc which may be critical or irreplaceable is the main game. Ideally any area such as shelving, cupboards etc should be protected from such loss by the designer/ builder ( and one might reasonably assume that they were safe to use as much they are presumed designed to be used). It is good to share our knowledge of such areas. I for one would prefer not to have to go around dropping things into holes to see if these objects are later retrievable.
Anyone else found any other "bermuda triangles " on board that we should avoid or protect?
I agree Evenstar - Ive had but few trips on Aroha as yet but very pleased with the way she responds
Goldfinch what are the most useful flexitools for grabbing bits and pieces - are there any reasonably inexpensive gadgets that one can get vision and light into dark holes? Doctors have great tools but a tad expensive for such a job.

Thanks Zanshin My arm was able to get through the hole just enough to push things further away! I guess the "void" will never get dandruff ( was a bottle of selsun shampoo that was lost) - I think I may make up a small plywood insert to cover up the hole, and silicone it into place, as I can see no useful function for this hole - other than ventilation/drainage which should be ok if I make a few small holes in the ply small enough not to let anything valuable through. Would there be any reason not to block up the gap ? Seems strange to have such a gap in cupboard! Aroha

I've recently purchased a 379 ( shoal draft, 2 cabin version) ( location Hobart Tas Australia)- today an object was lost, having slipped to the bottom of the cupboard under the handbasin in the head, thence through the "slot" at the (inboard) base of this cupboard and into the space under the shower base insert. While this was only a bottle of shampoo I do not want it rattling in the bilge until Davey Jones wants it! More importantly if anything else slips down there I would like to retrieve it. I cannot find a way to get into that space as no floorboard etc seems to provide access to this area (short of chopping up the shower base or removing the woodwork). Has any one else experienced this and found a solution. Thank you.
