The boat I'm currently looking at has only manual winches. I wonder if there is enough space to install electric winches (all 4) - and has anybody did it ? Thanks

Yes there is space.
We have three electric winches. The port side coach roof which has a small box in the aft cabin to hide the motors; And both jib sheet winches where the motors are hidden in the lockers.
Just make sure crew take care when pushing stuff to the back of the locker. I had the wires for one winch pulled out of the motor.
They are a huge benefit and more so with every passing year... But expensive to retrofit.

Retro fitted by previous owner to keep him sailing a little longer. He finally gave up on orders from his wife at the age of 82!
There's plenty space for the motors and even the one that reaches down into the cabin is not really noticeable - it looks part of the fixtures. I will look to see if I have any photos.
It would have been nice to have one on the stb side coachroof but then there would be the temptation to unfurl the main with it and that would not be a good idea. They really are very powerful and would do a lot of damage to a sail in a quick space of time.
Are you going for the in-mast option? If yes pay particular attention to the condition of the sail. An old and stretched sail does not furl well on the 43ds and that could be an extra cost.
The in-mast and electric winches enable me to sail solo with the aid of the autopilot.
As most of the power comes from the headsail the smaller in-mast main is no hinderance. In fact running downwind a speedy and easy combination is just a third of the main and full headsail.
If you want to PM me with details of your intended I can pass my thoughts.
Have you read the thread about the compression post problems and what to look for? I posted some pictures on that from a boat I looked at in Italy.

I red your post about the compression post - and took a note to check it when the right boat will come. Thanks. I'm looking for the owner version cabin but it looks like in Europe the 4 cabins version is popular. Since I sail nearly solo - yes I'm looking for in mast headsail. Unfortunately I couldn't find any 43DS newer than 2003/4.....

Production stopped in 2004. A few crop up in Australia/USA as 2005 but that was probably due to lag in the delivery to commissioning in these far flung parts.
There's not many around at the moment. No doubt people are holding off until this virus thing is over with. If I come across anything I will send you a link

Has anyone added a staysail to the SO 43DS? If so, how was it done?

Our has one added. The two Swiss guys that sailed it from the Med to NZ installed it. They mounted the inner stay just behind the windlass, down through the forward v berth and anchored it to the cross member on the hull. Sheets run to the forward cars on the jib car tracks, not ideal but it saves installing new tracks. You also need running back stays, a pain in the but, but very important unless you make it a masthead stay sail, and that kind of defeats the point. It works well, much easier to handle at 30kts than a Genoa with 3 reefs.

we just finished installing one on our 53. Simple installation. We ordered the parts from Jeanneau. its basically a L shape bracket that mounts under the deck just behind windless and then attaches to the bulkhead.

Did you have to readjust the backstay?

I mean - when you installed the staysail- did you have to re-adjust the staysail? The staysail doesn’t put an extra load on the mast ?

I also have the dividers. When I get to boat and have some time and when weather good I can try and get the pics done. The measurements might be awkward as they are curved etc. Be nice if someone else has pics of front cabin dividers (we have the bunks) as they seem to be missing on ours and the bunks are just storage now.

We have one electric winch on port side (for genoa) and we also use it for main if lazy by going around the other side winch, (not high load).

Colinnz,
I will try to work with the most basic of drawings and refine to something that others can use as a pattern.
So, far if have not come across any pictures of the the winch cover in the aft cabin. It is do unobtrusive that few people even notice it. Alas I cannot get to the boat with the Covid virus thing, but once I do I will certainly oblige.
