Hello all,
Just purchased a new to me 2008 Jeanneau 49ds. Still working out all the little kinks and hit a road block! Noticed salt water in the bilge under the motor. Checked all thru hills and rudder post. Emptied all the water out and have now narrowed it down to the water lock muffler under the engine on the port side. Looks like I might need to replace the muffler. I have read all the posts on here about vetus, buying from Jeanneau or having one custom built. I would appreciate any help you guys have to offer on the subject.
Thanks
Rick

I had a 2005 43DS. The same exact thing happened to me. I ended up installing a Vetus under the aft bed and bypassed the original water lock. In fact I left the original water lock installed just in case I needed it for an emergency backup but never had a problem with the Vetus in 4 years I used it. I probably have pics somewhere if you you need more information? In the grand scheme of things it was pretty easy it install after I figured out what to do and what I needed.
Hope this helps Scott

We had the same problem with 2006 49DS, and it was the water lock muffler as well. The way to tell is look at the access hole for the port side engine stringer while running the engine. If you see water running, and nothing behind the engine, than it’s most likely the same issue.
Jeanneau will be happy to sell you the same muffler. Takes several months, and about $3500 plus shipping to get one. We opted to have a new muffler made locally out of G10 fiberglass. We looked into installing a Vetus, but there was no place to put it, without introducing a hump in the system trapping water close to the engine. In rough seas, this could cause water to back up into the engine through the exhaust valves. Our mechanic said we are on our own if this happened and we would hav to sign a waiver releasing the mechanic for liability. The muffler we made was about $500 cheaper than Jeanneau’s part, and no shipping. Did take about 5 weeks to make as its complicated part. I have the Jeanneau diagram if you like it. Just PM me you email address.

Thank you all for the reply. We moved up from a catalina and now realize the benefits of buying a boat made in the US as parts were easily sourced. We do love the new boat, just working out the little problems left over by the PO.
