Maybe you call it something else outside Australia.
Anyway, a new member and my first post. Heading north to Indonesia soon and tackling the preventative maintenance now.
A piece of work to get out but worth it when you do. I can't see any other mention on this forum but surely others are failing at this age.
A friend of mine has built a fantastic fibreglass replacement which should hopefully outlast me.
Happy to talk through our findings if anyone's interested but can't work out how to post a photo.

Must be an Australian term then. I guess water muffler or similar, conveniently located under the engine and requiring removal of the fuel tank to access.
It did give me an opportunity to clean up the keel bolts and build weirs around them.
Importantly I'm now confident it won't leak again in a remote location where repair/ replacement is going to be an issue
Great to be talking to you guys. I'm already finding a bunch of helpful stuff as we navigate the same issues.

I'm Australian and have no clue what a pong box is either. What model boat is this?

Alex Is this the 'stuffing box' or the connection between the drive shaft and the prop shaft?

Okay, looks like it's referred to elsewhere as a waterlock muffler. The boats a 2002 43DS. Been sailing the East Coast for 6 years and had it fail in the early days. The owner had left one on board which he must have had fail as well. Repair consisted of glassing it over. I have worried since that it's not really a permanent repair but now very happy with a custom built solid glass vinyl ester resin replacement.
