Revised guidance on uploading photos and images
UNFORTUNATELY AN UNEXPECTED CONSEQUENCE OF PROBOARDS RECENTLY BRINGING IN BETTER SITE SECURITY IN A TRANSITION FROM HTTP:// TO HTTPS:// IS THAT EXTERNAL IMAGES NOW MUST BE HOSTED ON HTTPS:// SITES
THIS MEANS THAT 23HQ.COM WILL NO LONGER WORK TO AUTOMATICALLY OPEN AND CAN ONLY BE USED AS A LINK. More detail on the background is here support.proboards.com/thread/660963/help-images-displaying-on-forumI realise this will be a major frustration to many, especially those who have used 23hq in the past and also means that many older posts will no longer be showing images at all. I and the other moderators can though edit older posts to show the image link, but it will take a long time to retrospectively do this. If there is a thread that you want to see images on, please reply to this thread with the link to the thread you are trying to view. I have always tried to keep this forum free of any cost, so although we could pay Proboards for image hosting, I don't think that is a sustainable option as it is not cheap 2000MB costs $175 per year, but more of an issue is that if we stop paying all the images would be lost entirely.... Your understanding and positive ideas as always would be most welcome Malcolm

Hi, I am definitely no expert on this, and it is a shame as I was just getting the hang of inserting photos into posts, and a pic is worth a thousand words as they say. I have googled it, I'm sure you have probably googled it more ! For the future posts Flickr seems an option, https and so probably compatible, free for 1000 images, but with some size restrictions and no doubt some learning to make it all work. ..... but being a big outfit are probably going to be around for some time, so the pics are safe. For enthusiastic forum users who need more than 1000 pics, well, a few quid upgrades to 'pro' and sometimes 'free' although nice and cheap isn't always the way to go. The free forum is a good thing, but I would pay a subscription, having the recourse of other owners who will have found solutions and improvements for their boats , and the ability to help others with what ever I find out, is worth spending out on.
The resurrection of past post pictures would seem the biggest challenge, for which I have no answer, it would be a huge loss to those searching the forum for a snap of a problem solved in the past, I hope somebody turns up with a good idea soon.
Keep up the good work, it is appreciated.
CB

Thank you CB for your comments which I appreciate and agree with.
Going to any subscription route for the forum would inevitably create lots of Admin in chasing payments, membership lists etc which I want to avoid.
Google images is an option but you have to use a very long link for it to show. It also is different inserting photos on a desktop view to mobile...
I have contacted 23HQ and hopefully they will be switching to HTTPS which solve the legacy issue.
Welcome more thoughts and possible options
Thanks

imgur.com uses https. It's free and easy to use with one little wrinkle. To upload a photo go to imgur.com, click on "+ new post", drag the photo into the window or select it from your computer and it uploads to imgur. It then has a "Copy link" button, if you click on that you have a link to the hosted photo. Here's the wrinkle, the link that it gives you is not a png/jpg image link and proboards doesn't like that. So what I do is I go to the address on that link. It should show the image you uploaded. Right click on the image and you should see the option to "copy image address". If you click on that you get a link to the actual image that works on proboards. It's not ideal but it's pretty close. David

I installed Flickr and uploaded some pictures. Let’s test if it works: nope, it does not. Probably because of the same reason David describes above...... Let’s try if a link works: flic.kr/p/2iGWiHZ

i joined flickr ( the free bit ) and posting with photos seems quite easy, once uploaded to flickr, just tapping the share button and selecting the bb code option, copy and the paste code into the forum post, the only 2 gremlins being 1) I don't seem to be able to copy the code on ipad or phone, it's easy on the main frame, and 2) I'm limited to 1000 uploads without paying money ...... still a few to go then. CB Thanks CB Yes the BB code also has the full jpg URL in code, but it only seems to work, for me at least if you insert if you use the BBC code option

Thanks CB and Malcolm. I just logged in on my Macbook and see that in Flickr I can chose this "Embed" option. This was not visible on my I-pad. Lets try with a picture of my new inner forestay with stormjib: Yes it works. It is a bit of a hassle and definitely not ideal but it works for me until someone has a better solution.

Good that you got that working. It does seem that you have to be in desktop view to do this. On the mobile version right at the bottom of the screen you can select desktop view, but of course it is then rather small to do the cut and pasting...
