Hi folks, On my SO 40DS original 16 KG Bruce with 100 M of 10mm chain. 40 Lb. CQR 50 M 8mm chain and 50 M of nylon wrap for spare in back locker. Having no further experience with the new ones, I am quite happy with what I have. Up and down it goes with no problems. Big advantage is the Quick chain counter on board that allow a controlled up hulling and a precise chain length reading on the helm.
Alex , you sail a 40DS , that - most likely - means you have a Leroy Somer windlass. I had some problems , AGAIN , with my windlass , will ask Malcolm to put it on the H&T section as it is relevant for many . Next to the fact that this winch is of a poor and weak design , my electrical motor has huge difficulties raising my anchor ( diy rocna close to 30kg) and just 8mm chain. Yours is 10mm , which is a substantial increase of weight compaired to mine , are you aible to raise your anchor smoothly ? 00 meters of 10mm in a 40 feet , isn't the bow going down a bit ? Regards

Hi Sailbleu, Sorry for the late reaction. No, my windlass is a Lofrans' Airon 1000 watt. (boat 2005,one of the last made). I have no problems raising anchor. Seem to be a nice piece of equipment. Yes , chain is rather heavy but when I bought my yacht 3 years ago it was there one year old at that time. The old 50 M 8 mm chain is stored back serving the second anchor.

I have a Sarca Excel 16Kg anchor with 30m of 10mm chain on a SO 409.
I thought I should include this in the list of anchors as the Sarca is not widely known. I replaced a Manson Supreme 20Kg. The Manson worked well in the often variable anchorages around Sydney ie silt, sand and weed but since starting club racing I found that stowing and restoring the anchor to the bowsprit every Wednesday evening was bad for my aging back. The rollbar on the Manson supreme makes it particularly clumsy to stow. The Sarca is a compact anchor that always seems to set, especially in soft silt and in my experience so far, holds better than the heavier 20Kg Manson. I expect that this is because the Manson supreme (like the equivalent Rocna) is a plough anchor while the Sarca is a burying anchor.

I was thinking it could be handy to have everyone to list what anchor they have and whether the bow roller was modified to accommodate it 2002 Sun Odyssey 40 Delta 16kg Pivoting bow roller. Does not seem to be standard, but perhaps was an option as it is the same as listed on the 40.3 I've been looking at getting a 20kg Rocna Vulcan or Spade. I made a template for the Rocna and whilst it fits just as well as my Delta when up, it looks like the stem shape will cause it to hit the bow (I think). There is a Spade on a 43 DS next to me and it looks like it has a similar sized bow roller and may have the same problem but they have fitted a stainless plate on the bow. I have ULTRA anchor and am totally happy with it. The only issue with it is the price since it is only in SS available.

I recently acquired a 2004 43ds. It has a "Bruce" 20 Kg fitted and while it has the shape of a Bruce it has no identity stamped on it; no "Bruce" no "Belgium", just "20Kg". Why would Jeanneau have fitted the boat out with a Bruce Copy rather than the real thing? Original Jeanneau Agent who sold to the first owner was Clarke & Carter, Levington, Ipswich. Has anyone else had this experience?
