Hi, we are looking to get a bow thruster fitted to our SO 39i. My biggest concern is sail performance. Our boat really sails lovely, really well balanced, will fitting a bow thruster impact much on the sail performance of the boat. Does anyone have a SO39i with a bow thruster, if so how does she sail.
Thanks very much for any feedback

We have the factory fitted Maxpower and as it has been fitted from new cannot comment on before and after, but in my mind the boat still sails well.
The factory one does not fair the two apertures - I understand that if a slight profile is built up it helps with laminar flow. Why not fit a retractable type? more complex and expensive but there should be room beneath the forward berth.
Of course in addition you will need a "heavy" battery and also heavy gauge wiring, so the additional weight in the forepeak is also a negative for performance. Guess there will always be a trade off.
I do like the thruster, but after 7 seasons we have learnt to manoever the boat most times without its assistance, especially in the last 2 years as the battery is pretty shot, but we will replace the battery for the coming season as it is good to have in tight circumstances when the wind is really gusty

I haven't noticed any difference in sailing or motoring performance. I would agree with the comment about the fairing of the tunnel where it exits the hull - it needs to be done by someone who is very knowledgeable and skillful about this. Definitely NOT for DIY or the backyard fiberglass guy.

Fitted a Lewmar unit to our 39i in 2013. Fairing was done professionally. No noticeable impact on speed. best. Expensive, but worth it. NornaJ

I have more pictures, but here the max size is 1 mb, and mostly are bigger.
I've installed a Max power CT 80 with 185 mm diameter, it was the same jeanneau installed originally, the battery I chosen is a Optima yellow top 75 amp with 975 cca, it works very good, I'm happy. hope can help you to better understand what is the work to do..
Ciao
