I recently bought a jeanneau 54ds it is based in the US virgin Islands where the level of technical expertise is not high! It was recently fitted throughout with 3 banks of AGM batteries. The engine battery is lead acid and has not been changed. Can any one advise me whether the Cristec CPS2 charger fitted to the boat is capable of charging these batteries. I am having lots of problems!

Hi Sedman, How about a few details of specific problems. Usually lead acid batteries have a slightly higher soak charge cycle to fully charge which is not recommended for AGM batteries so one setting will not be truly suitable for both. My SO 30i had a simple relay to charge batteries in parallel when the engine is running, a system that is clearly not intended for dissimilar batteries. My electrical tech installed a VSR so the are charged sequentially rather than in parallel, but even then recommended changing all batteries to be the same type and age. I believe this is best practice and at minimum, batteries to be connected in parallel must be same type and same age. After all if house batteries needed change, you may have seen the best of the engine battery also, and would not want to damage the new (larger?) ones for the sake of stretching the last of the old engine battery life. But lots of problems may involve several causes. Rene460

Hi, I'm reviving this old thread to discuss about Cristec chargers and AGM batteries. I do have a CPS2 OEM 25A on my 2010 36i and I'm evaluating installation of new AGM batteries. I looked at the manual, but it does not talk about AGM batteries, unless I'm not able to "decode" the settings... What I see is 4 options: - Type 1 Calcium Lead tin - charges at 14,4v, boost at 15,1 - Type 2 Lead Sealed - charges at 13,6v, boost at 14,3 - Type 3 Gelled lead or Calcium Lead - charges at 13,4v, boost at 14,1 - Type 4 Open Lead with free electrolyte - charges at 13v, boost at 13,7 Is one of these settings ok for AGM batteries? Should I consider changing the charger as well? In this case, it would become pretty expensive to replace batteries with AGM.... Advice is appreciated! Teo

Teo, On Cristec, for AGM batteries select Gel. Sedman, Replace the engine battery with AGM and select as above. It will take Cristec 24 hours to go in floating mode (green light comes on and off... that is good by the way). On my SO 35 I eliminated 2 house and one engine 12v wet batteries. Installed 4 house and a smaller engine battery all AGM's. Cristec happy charging. To achieve 5 batteries on SO 35 was a bit of a challenge. Had to pour concrete interlaced with rubber membranes until 2AM to achieve a flexible non flammable and corrosion resistant system.

Thanks a lot - I'll go ahead with AGM batteries charging them with Gel settings.... in the future I may go for a more advanced charger, but I'm trying to postpone some "investments"

Teo, Check the battery manufacturer's recommendations. My Lifeline AGM use the "lead sealed" setting. Geoff

I have 4 (1 engine 3 house) WEST MARINE Dual-Purpose AGM Batteries (105 Amp Hours, Group 31). EastPenn is the manufacturer. EastPenn recommends bulk charging at 14.4V to 14.6V, and float charging at 13.5V.
I went over the charging options of my Cristec CPS2 12V/40A battery charger with EastPenn and they reommended the "Lead Sealed" Type 2 of Bulk at 14.3V and float at 13.6V as the best choice using the Cristec charger. This is consistent with Geoff's post.
I also have a Balmar Smartgauge Battery Monitor. Balmer recommends that I should choose on the Balmar "Type 3" AGM setting which are lower voltages (14.0-14.2V) and are closest to what I will be charging with the Cristec 14.3V. If I could set the Cristec to charge at 14.6V on the Balmar I would chose Type 1 Deep Cycle, wet cell, antimony lead acid (14.6V/29.2 max).
Does any one know if you can customize teh charging voltage of a Cristec charger?

I have the 12v 50A Cristec cps600 but for some strange reason it stopped working. No lights but I have shore power. I changed from 3 x traditional lead ACID 110Ah to 4 x Victron AGM 110 Ah but made no adjustments to the charger. I had understood no adjustments were necessary. Now 6 mths later the charger has stopped. Is this a Cristec problem ( I read lots of other threads complaining of same thing) or maybe my boat was hit by lightening when I was away. Any comments/suggestion would be gratefully rcd. Andrew

Assuming that the power is being supplied as usual this sounds like a problem in the charger itself. Best case you have a blown fuse, check the manual.
