From the previous owner I learned that the boxing around the mast post in the salon can be removed, because he told me he installed some equipment in there. What's the key to pulling that boxing off? Is it on the clips like the panels in the aft berths that can be removed to give engine access?

Hopefully yours is the same as mine... First you will need to remove the ceiling panel around it. It is held up by two velcro pads on the left and right of the post near the wall. Reach up into the gap between the panel and the wall and gently pull down to release the velcro grip.
The post cover is held in place by three sets of two clips at the bottom, middle, and top. Starting at the top place your hands on either side of the cover and press together to release the clips.
Cheers!

Thanks! I'll try it next time I'm there. I thought it had to be something like that.
