The bottom of our chain locker is lower than the drains, leading to standing water and a rusty length of chain. I was going to simply line the base in plastic sheet to raise it a little; but wondered if anyone else has other thoughts?
Then will get the chain re-galvanised :-(

Same on SO 35, I used some very cheap plastic garden paving mouldings, cut them to a rough locker shape and casually launched them in the locker bottom, making a raised floor just to keep the chain out of the puddle. Was meant to be a temporary thing to preserve my new chain ....... perhaps one day I'll fit a lower drain or make a better platform but it isn't high on the list, the locker empties when sailing and flushes with rain / hose water.
I have 30 meters of good 10mm chain and 30 meters of warp spliced , sitting in the shed available at a bargain £ if you are passing .

Zanshin - I’m loving the coloured chain. Any special paint? We have a specialist metal paint in the UK called Hammerite, which might be useful for that… What did you use?

Hi there
I bought a couple of swimming pool grid tiles, and cut them to fit the bottom of the locker. The high is just perfect above the drain holes

papawads - I used standard metal paint (Rustoleum, I believe). It probably won't hold up too long under use, but my main method is a chain counter so the colors are just backup. I used to have those little inserts in the chain, but they are hard to see and kept on falling out.

I thought someone had put tape across bottom few millimeters of the drain to act as a temporary dam,then poured epoxy it to just below the edge of the tape. Let epoxy cure, remove tape and now the epoxy bottom of the locker is higher than the bottom of the drain and water can flow out- leaving a dry locker.

What MickMeck shows at www.jeanneau-owners.com/hintsandtips/anchordrain.html is for an SO 35, not a 43ds. Have any of you guys drilled another hole lower down to create a third drain hole? If the configuration is the same as on the SO35 then i doubt it would be poss bec i don't think there is any access underneath the chain locker on the 43ds. Now if the chain locker wall is the same as the hull then one hole would be poss. Reason i ask is bec i would love to create a bit more depth in the chain locker to reduce the build-up of chain which then jams the gypsy when weighing anchor. I have already made some other modifications which now enables me to haul in chain up to about 45 metres before jamming but i am sure if the bottom of the locker were to be 2" lower this might raise my limit of 45m by another 10-15m. I have a plastic grate in the bottom of my anchor locker, and it has kept the chains pretty much rust free. I have swapped ends once in 15 years, and it all still looks good. I have 270 ft on one anchor, and about 80 ft on the other, with a plastic divider separating the two chains. And several coils of line if I ever need more.
Regarding the pile up of chain, I found that I have to fake it out into the anchor locker as it comes up. One hand holding the windlass remote, while the other grabs the chain and lays it out in the locker. No problems. I have also cut out the fixed hawse pipe on the windlass, so that I can handle the two chains independently. The hawse is just a pain in the neck and serves no useful purpose.

Andrew The chain locker is a separate entity. There is access underneath the chain locker, that is how I drilled the hole on the bottom and then ran a hose to the hull. While the link was for an SO 35, it also works fine for the 43DS. You can gain access after crawling into the void under the V berth forward area.

Thanks for the info Mick. Will take a look the next time i am onboard. Not much room to move in that space since th bow-thruster + two small batteries occupies the rear half of the space. Andrew
