Can any owner tell me what sort of speeds they can get out of their so37 at different points of sailing. Also how does it fair against a Bavaria36. When new, I could leave the Bavaria standing, but of late I am finding it hard to keep up with one. I have had the rigging adjusted for the first time in two years, so I am hoping this will now increase its performance any advice appreciated.

I recently purchased my SO 37 and motored her to my home port without having a real opportunity to sail her. I moved up to the SO 37 from a Beneteau 35s5. The Beneteau was what I thought to be a reasonably quick boat so I was concerned about at least having the SO 37 be of equal speed. The first thing I did was redo the sail inventory to a more aggressive sail plan. This past weekend was the first time I've had average winds (10-20 kt range) to make a real assessment of my SO's speed potential. Speeds were exceptional. Broad reaching with the full genoa (140) and main, she was doing 8+ sustained speed indicated on the knotmeter (calibrated) and GPS (SOG). Close reaching was between 6 and 7.5 depending on the wind strength. Top speed was 8.5 on a beam in approx 15-20 kts of wind. Seas were a moderate chop without tidal factors. So far, I'm impressed as long as she keeps the same characteristics over time.

You may have fallen i a very common 'trap' by assuming you have a speed loss and the Bavaria is still the same! Almost every yachter try in different ways to encrease their performance. You may allready have been on the maximum edge, the Bavaria may have been on his lower. I have left harbors fully loaded speeding past what should be faster boats, but they could not handle the load. Later on the stage they have caught up ith me as they have reached their optimum wheight. The main question is what have happened to your speed during theese two years? Another thing is the weather conditions. In a recent race I took part in I parked a Beneteu 47 in 5 - 8 knots of wind, it parked me in 15 knots of wind. The Bavarias are quite fast in little to moderate wind, but give them 15 -25 knots they are in problems. The 36 is 800kg lighter than you (net). As for my speeds: I have had 15+knots readings in 28m/s winds from Lagos to Porto Santo, wind angle 160! We did the trip in 60 hrs. I have had speed readings between 3,5 and 7 knots tight upwind in 15-20 knots all depending on my wheight and sea condition. To continue will just make you more confused. Try to make your own polar diagram for different conditions and work from there. Good luck!

Thanks for your message, your speeds are much the same as mine in same wind conditions. I have on freak conditions hit 10.2k but not achieved this recently. What mainsail do you have, I have in mast reefing and not sure what performance is lost with these, but the ease of operation makes up for any loss of power.

I went with a full battened, full roach main, with one reef point made of Dimension Square Weave Dacron, done by a local sailmaker here in NC (Omar Sailmakers). I have a rigid vang so we were able to push the roach out all the way to the backstay and not worry about chafe. For the genoa, I went with a 140% of the same material. Nothing especially noteworthy about this sail other than it's about as large as you can go on the boat without repositioning the genoa tracks. I have a asymmetrical spinnaker that we maxed out for sheer size. I've only flown it once so far so I don't know too much about how successful this sail will be. Regards- john
