We are looking at cruising the Caribbean next winter (assuming that is legal by then). Which of these is best for keeping in touch with adult children, getting emails, and getting weather forecasts? Thank you!

Practical Sailor has had a number of articles that may help you make a decision.
I purchased an inReach mini a couple of years ago for an Atlantic crossing, but the trip hasn't happened. It can handle text messages quite well, and subscriptions aren't very expensive, but since I haven't actually used it offshore, I can't say much more than that.

I have been using an inreach for a few years of cruising. It is great for short messages and can send receive to an email address. But limited to short messages. I have not tried their weather services. The tracking site is excellent for friends and family to keep up to date on location. In theory the SOS function can be important, I suspect not as reliable as an epirb but does allow communication. The batteries last for days. I haven’t tried the Iridium devices.
