Looking at my rudder, I can't believe there was no attempt to create a foil to the leading edge. (4'9" shoal draft model)
Is this really the plow that it appears to be or can anyone think of a reason for this?
Is this the same foil shape as the SF35?
Anyone try to add some Bondo to the leading edge to create a little more hydrodynamic shape?

I have a 2004 SO35, and the rudder is very nicely shaped. No flat leading edge at all.

No flat toward the bottom where it starts to curve? It is actually a 2004 SO35 I'm considering buying.
Is your boat a shoal draft?
I'm wondering if somehow it's aftermarket...

The shoal draft versions that I am aware of (SO34.2 & SO39i) have a standard depth rudder that Jeanneau (rather crudely) modify by chopping the bottom 6" or so off then filling - hence the flat section This is not the same as the fully moulded design on the standard draft Malcolm |

Ok, so I checked my pictures and you're right, there is a small flat section where the leading edge begins to curve back. I guess I was misinterpreting your statement about no attempt to create a foil shape on the leading edge.
The leading edge is, for the most part, nicely shaped. I wouldn't guess the effect of the flat area would be significant. But I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I really don't know.
I can tell you that the rudder can stall out when you have too much sail up in a good blow. Under the right conditions, there can be quite a bit of weather helm, and if you simply try to turn downwind, the rudder will stall. Adjusting the sails is the correct way to prevent this problem, and it's not hard, but you have to think about it.
