I have a 2004 40.3 and it leaks water from somewhere. I know for certain its not coming from the deck, any through hull, shaft, rudder, or transducers. I originally thought it may be condensation from the air conditioner but have ruled that out as well. I think I can rule out the water tanks as there is no water or any marks around the tanks. Not absolutely certain that maybe a water line could be leaking as it hard to see all the lines as they are blocked from view.
What makes it more difficult to see where the water is coming from is the hull liner masks so much of the boat. The keel bolts are dry but if water was coming in it may be entering the inner bilge and any water may not be noticeable. The water seems to first pool up in the forward stateroom under the floorboards. I vacuumed out about 2-3 gallons every three days or so. It first fills up the inner bilge then the outer bilge - I usually have it vacuumed out before it gets high enough to get into the sump.
Trying to isolate one thing at a time for the past three months but it like chasing a ghost. I even pulled the boat out of the water but nothing is visible from the outside.
Has anyone else experience this???

Hi,
I have a SO37. I normally fill only the aft water tank for weekending and short cruises. During our last lengthy cruise, I began filling the forward tank. during one fill up, I wasn't watching and the tank overfilled to the point of having water all the way up the neck of the filler hose. I didn't think much of it until later that day when I found about 3-5 gals of water under the forward cabin floorboards.
I was unable to trace the source of the water but remain convinced that overfilling the tank was the cause since I've not had it happen again. For my boat, I now pay very close attention to the forward tank while filling and do not let the level come close to filling up to the hose.
This may not be what you're experiencing but might be an item to cross of the list of likely causes.
Regards,

Thanks for the tip - I will look at that to see if the filll tube is leaking. However, I have emptied both water tanks now, closed all thru hulls and I am still getting water in the forward stateroom. I beginning to think it maybe loose keel bolts. I will be pulling the boat out for the season in mid-October and will see if these are loose. In the meantime I am still searching.
Thanks

Petergrifin,
I have a SO43DS. Was getting water in under the vberth (which by the way does not have a scupper hole running to the bilge). It wasn't entering when berthed unless I washed it. Came in under sail or taking water over the bow. Portlites are aft of the locker under the berth so couldn't be there. Pulled all the chain and rode out of the chain locker and discovered the two scupper tubes used to empy the chainlocker were not well sealed. The chain locker is part of the deck and the wall of the locker is about 3-4" inside of the hull. When the factory installed the scuppers they didn't put any 4200 or 5200 on the outside or inside but only put a ball of sealer of some sort between the hull and sail locker. Could not completely remove the scupper so managed to unthred the inner nut and push out far enough to put 5200 on outside and a bead on inside before re-installing the nut.
NO LEAKs.
I do have one more leak. The water comes through the chain plates which are a fabricated round plate that gets bolted through the deck to an internal chain plate. Must not have any sealer. Trouble is I will have to jury rig some temporary guys and remove the plate to seal it.
Also if you are berthed in salt water, you can check and see if the water in the bilge is brackish, i.e. salty...(taste it) if so, water is coming from outside if not it is your fresh water system.
Hope this helps.

I have a 43DS, and a water leak that I have been unable to find. I think there are multiple sources. Its a brackish water in the bilge and the boat lies in the ocean. I believe some is coming from the engine heat exchangers and hoses. Some may be coming from the hot water expansion tank. Search under the latter in this forum and there is a protocol for bleeding pressure to eliminate leakage. I do know also that overfilling tanks can fill the bilge. I drilled a limber hole, mentioned in the previous post as a "scupper hole", in between the V berth locker under the bed and the main bilge. This allowed for drainage.

Thanks for the suggestions. I firmly believe the water is coming in from the outside as I have had my fresh water tanks empty for three weeks, holding tank is empty for weeks and there has been no rain for two weeks. I am getting 6 to 7 gallons a water a day in the boat sitting at the dock!
I have looked previously at the anchor locker both inside and out and no evidence of water. I believe it must be coming in through the keel although with the false bilge/hull liner you cannot see anything.
I will be pulling the boat out for the season here in Michigan next week and will be going to work to find the problem. I think I will flood the bilge with water while the boat is on the hoist to see if any water leaks out of the boat from the keel joint. Not sure what else to do.
Thanks

I have an So35 taking in 1 to 2 litres water daily.I blocked the drain holes between the bilge compartments and dried each one. Sump still filled.THERE is a direct hose from beneath the stern gland to the sump which is not visible.Only when I blocked the drain from beneath the stern gland did it fill with water.Suggest you try this and eliminate stern gland first

I found the leak - when the boat was pulled for the season I filled the bilge with water while it was in the hoist and waited until I could see something come out. Of course it was raining that day so it made the job a little more difficult.
After wiping the bottom off and trying to keep it dry in certain places while it was raining I noticed a small drip of water coming out from a forward through hull that is an intake for the wash down pump that supplies water to the forward anchor lock on deck. Apparently, the caulk or installl failed causing this leak. It was impossible to see any water coming from the inside as the through hull fitting was installed on top of the interior hull/bilge liner.
So, I took the culprit out and cut an opening around the hull/bilge liner some what larger than the through hull fitting so I can now see what is going on. I made a backing plate for the through hull nut and reinstalled the fitting so it rests solely against the inner hull. When I launch the boat in the spring I will now be able to tell if it leaks as I will be able to see any water that may come in - I hoping not to see any!!

Peter,
That has to be a good feeling to know you at least "FOUND" the source, but still a bit of a worry in the gut before launching next spring. At least for me any how, the good feeling would way out weigh the worry about the new fitting leaking!

I had the same problem of leak in my SO42i and I finally after 1 year of trying I found my problem I have an aircondition in the cabin behind next to the engine. The hose that was supposed to go to the bildge pumb was not passed through and the water was remaining in the hudge behind the engine so when the water was above the whole level it was coming in all compartments under the floor and finally in the bildge but the water that was under the wholes of the compartments were staying there. Finally we found the hose where it was stopped and we connect there another hose and we drill under the engine and we came to the bildge pumb and finally I can enjoy my aircondition since I leave in Cyprus with 40degrees celcius. Sorry for my English I hope you understand what I mean.
