Morning all,
I got an email from Navionics about my med navigation pack expiring, and went to pay etc but was presented with a notice saying we will ship it to you, and your old one will expire.
Erm - I bought this in a shop - and now they need to ship me an SD card - not online? They also call it a GPS card - not the chart pack that I was expecting.
Rather confusing - I was hoping to just pay the fee and continue using my charts? Anyone done this please?
Is a GPS card the same thing as a navigation pack? 121euro is not cheap so I don't really want to buy the wrong thing!
Many thanks
Mike

Definitely confusing, I believe regardless of what they call it the electronic charts that you purchased and came on a memory card include a subscription to a one year daily update.
When the year is up, the cost is to renew that subscription. I assume there is no reason why you cannot continue to use the card you purchased, rocks don't move, i'ts normally lights, errors and new structures that change.
Not wishing to sound cynical, but I believe this is just another way of making money out of us.
I hope I'm right and the card doesn't self destruct after one year, as metaphorically I am in the same boat!

I bought new Navionics card for my aging chart plotter E120 in Spring 2017 due to inability to update it any longer. One year of daily updates passed and was updating it quite regularly until expiration date. Since then one complete season without updates and everything is working just fine. Rocks don’t move as previously stated 😉

More information. Apparently I need the actual card - I cannot just update my account.
So now I have to go to the boat and get my card (don't need many reasons to go there to be honest).
If I have the card and use the 'updater' then apparently it is done online.
Will update as apparently it runs out in 2 days.

"Update" can mean two different things: updating the actual chart information on the card, or updating (renewing) the subscription. You can update the card whenever you wish as long as you have an active subscription. According to the Navionics web site, you can start a new subscription for an old card even if the old one has expired. So no need to hurry.
To just continue using your charts you don't need to do anything, but it makes sense to update the charts before the subscription expires.

My Navionics card subscription expired a few years ago and the charts are still working fine. The charts are now missing a new harbour in our area so maybe I will update it soon. Some of the extra features Navionics supply such as Live Sonar and I think the routing procedures need an active subscription to function. Here the annual subscription is about half the cost of a new map.

For what it's worth: I had a UK and northern Europe sd for our chart plotter card but in 2017 we planned to sail from the UK to the Med. The local chandlery did an exchange for me by accepting the UK card and then giving me one covering our new cruising area at half price (£100 instead of £200). However, 2 years on and the new card has now 'expired' in terms of updates but we continue to use it quite happily and it functions normally. With Captain's Mate notes on the CA site, plus local knowledge in Greece (where we are based now), and the odd chart we haven't felt the need to pay again...so far.
ADDED to this, I found that for a very reasonable £11.50 or so I could buy the Navionics app for my phone which (presumably) is a fully up to date version, just in case I felt like comparing the two.
Maybe that helps?

Mickey, I've always updated my card online. I have one the old CF cards. If you go here: www.navionics.com/gbr/support/chart-installer-tutorial/renew the system will lead you through the update process. It is a bit of a pain but it's work for me. The card is the same as when the boat was new back in 2008. You need to set up an account with Navionics which is useful as you work directly with them and no middle man. Ian

Navionics is now owned by Garmin

btw: Garmin is different from Ray, B&G, S&H etc. - the main difference is that Garmin have his own maps and hardware - e.g. you do not buy device from one company and maps from another - and it looks like Garmin is not very interested in the maps business they just sell hardware.. and the maps are not very protected etc.

Mikey are you saying that your chart itself has vanished from the plotter? Some of the special features may no longer operate but as I understand it the chart should still be operative and in full detail. You would not want to loose your chart mid ocean if you did not update on time!! Contact Raymarine and or Navionics and let us know how you got on.

Agree. I would expect a message informing the user that the charts are no longer corrected but to remove the chart itself is crazy. I have a Navionics Platinum chart folio on a B&G plotter which has not been corrected for at least 2 years (I never signed up for any subscription service) and been informed I can get it updated by repurchasing new folio for 50% of the price but the charts still work albeit uncorrected . I think also Navionics are giving their Apps and programs a face lift and changing the programs for plotters to the renamed GPS one to differentiate it from the Apps they do for tablets etc and maybe why the want to exchange cards during this period.

So to confirm, my original chart and my live backup one are not working anymore.
They appaered to have stopped when the axiom told me they are out of date.
Raymarine have suggested that I factory reset my Axiom which is not nice as everything is customised at the moment - but hey ho.
Will update.

So the factory reset got the original card working, but my new update is buggered.
I am inspecting to see if I can fix myself but I doubt it.
So at least i have charts from 2 years ago!
