Our rudderpost, whenever the wheel is turned, is squealing like a trapped piglet! Is there any simple solution to this issue? Do we need to haul her out and do a complete servicing of the post, bearings, etc? Can we put a sling under the rudder at the dock to lift it up and service this while in the water?

Could be a bearing issue. Be vary wary of sticking any lubricants in - oil/grease are about the worst things you can use and water should be sufficient.
The bearings that came stock on our SF35 were rubbish and we had them changed under warranty a couple of times. As soon as we're out of warranty we're going to get some decent ones made and fitted.

Hi,
Before you resign yourself to tearing apart the rudder/steering assembly you may want to try lubricating the steering cable sheaves directly under the pedestal (assuming you have wheel steering). I had a terrible squeal and thought it was the rudder bearings. I read a post that offered the above solution, did it, and have not heard a noise for over 2 years now.
Hope this gives you something to try short of taking out the rudder....
Regards,

I agree with sailby2,
I had a slight but very annoying squeak on a new SO36i and when I lubricated the wheels the cable rolled on and the bearings at the helm, I was met with beautiful silence.

I initially suspected the steering cable and sheaves, but, upon removing the covers over the aft berth and sticking my head into the rudderpost area, it was clear that the sheaves are silent and all noise comes from the rudderpost (or immediate vicinity thereof). I'll explore further this coming weekend to see if the noise eminates from the friction of cables on quadrants, or truly the rudder bearing.

Dockmate Bruce (Beneteau owner) and I stuck our heads into the netherworlds of the steering linkages last weekend, with our spouses Denni & Barb spinning the helm. The squeaking is clearly originating in the rudderpost, not the quadrants or sheaves. We think that we need to pull the rudder after haul-out in late October and investigate/replace all bearing materials.
The boat is 7 years old. It's probably time ...
Anyone think that more immediate attention is necessary?

Do you have any divers aboard? If so, when at anchor try measuring whether the anchor is still at 90 degrees to the hull. Attach rope/wire/string to a point on the deck/hull join, dive and, with the rudder dead centre, mark the rope. Repeat with the same position on the other side to see if your rudder might be bent and thus cause the friction. I might be particularly paranoid, but I did lose my whole rudder at sea and that cause a dent in my sailing...

I have had some issues with the rudder on my SO43. When I dropped the rudder, the lower plastic bush bearing came out with it. It was clear that the bearing had been turning in the rubber bush. The yard guys said that most times they drop Jeanneau rudders the bush comes out on the shaft. I also had severe corrosion of the rudder shaft at the lower bearing O ring (see rudder problems post). I replaced the rudder bearings with a set of self aligning roller bearings from Jefa and it has transformed the feel of the helm. Cost 600 Ruros and quite easy to fit. Call their excellent sales guy in Holland.
