There may have been a reference to this issue on thread a while back, but I am just contemplating where to put an external waterproof speaker in the cockpit on the 39i for the main radio, as we find we cannot easily hear the unit from the cockpit - OK my advancing years does not improve my audio spectrum I do use a handheld as well but regret there not being an option on commissioning for a dual station unit that might have been fitted as OEM I have bought a Simrad speaker which although the same size as the ST60+ units, so would fit in the space at the port helm, looks quite different (black), but Raymarine don't appear to offer an external speaker option as far as I can ascertain. My other thought is to put it in the table or in one of locker fronts, but don't want to disfigure our pride and joy Any views? Malcolm

Hello Malcolm and Marty, Raymarine do offer a remote speaker. It is part number R49003 and has the shape of the ST60 range of instruments. The advantage seems to be it has a volume control on the speaker. I hope to buy one to put it at the helm because it will fill the last hole in the precut Navpod. Like you I am not keen to cut big holes in the boat in case later I find out it was a mistake. I am not quite that confident! Happy sailing, Trevor

Many thanks I did search the Raymarine website in vain , but have now found it with help of your part number. Will order one and hope to get a refund on the black Simrad one

I put a cockpit speaker in the port side lazarette. Works well as it fills the cockpit rather than aiming out to sea. Once you have cut one hole it gets easier making holes in your boat!

I also hated the idea of cutting a hole to mount a VHF speaker in the cockpit, so I decided to purchase a wireless remote access microphone for our Uniden VHF. It needs charging at least once a day and can work with regular AA also. Besides allowing you to talk and listen, you can also control most of the radio functions from the mic.
Of course the downside is that it can go overboard very easily. I keep mine on a long lanyard that is tied to the helm pedistal.

:)Speak to Waypoint 1 in Queen Annes Battery, Plymouth.
They fitted two in our cockpit ie one in each stern locker and you can fade them in or out by using the balance control on the radio.
They are also Raymarine main dealers.
Our boat is a new 39DS
