Has anyone here experienced trouble with their Yanmar starter not engaging? Mine has begun to act up. It "clicks" upon turning the key, but doesn't engage and crank the engine. It takes anywhere from one to five or so attempts before it will engage and start. I just came across a thread on another board that addresses it. Any comments/advice here?

I have not had an issue like this with my Boat Yanmar, but did with the yanmar in my trackhoe. My case a bad ground. This has happened with other starters too. Another occasion it was the key switch itself.
The other issue it has been with ANY starter, is the main copper starting coil has a short, the solenoid works, ie the click, but the copper has shorted, heated up, and will not turn. If you can tap the starter with a hammer or equal, and it turns over, then it is a good chance it is this issue.
Of course, we are assuming the battery is fully charged etc too.

Resolved! I found a posting on another BB that addressed this problem. I also spoke with an electrician at the Morris Yard in Maine. It seems that several boat builders extended the wire harness length to reach the aft cockpit. In doing so, they undersized the wire causing a voltage drop to the starter soloniod. The solution is to install a second solonoid close to the starter and use #8 wire from the starter lug to the solonoid and from the new solonoid to the original solonoid, while using the original starter solonid wire to power the new solonoid.
Works like a charm.
