I am looking to add a backup depth sounder with a non-thru hull transducer. It would be separate from the RM Axiom system. If you have added one, please let me know the details and if you were happy. Also, it seems most of the on hull transducers state the hull must be solid fiberglas. I am assuming Jeanneaus are.

I use a in-hull depth sounder connected to my Garmin 556s plotter - does a great job - it is positioned after the propeler and before the rudder - my original one is located on the side in front of the keel, but is not very reliable and I installed this one and it does a great job the last 5 years...

In case my RM Axiom system fails, I am thinking of using the Garmin Striker 4 series. What make & model transducer did you use?

My one is P79 - my chartplotter has a fishfinder also and the P79 does a great job.
The only pitty thing is that in hull transducers do not have sea temperature...

Vasko - are you sure about the temperature advice? I have the old Raymarine in hull depth sounder and temp gauge still on my boat - and have just installed the Axiom IN HULL transducer shooting through the hull just in front of the keel (Under floor in fore cabin). The temp gauge on both instruments is roughly 0.5 deg out and neither is in the water (I hope! :-) )
I was told that the temperature was worked out by the 'layers' in the water which sensitive sounders can pick up. I assume this to be true as both my separate sensors are pretty close to each other in the guestimate department.
Mike
(EDIT and aside - to all those thinking about the axiom, the transom mount transducer DOES NOT have to be in the water - just mounted mine in silicon directly to the hull removing as much air as possible and perfect. Depth to 100m so far with fishes and realvision working perfectly).

It looks like the P79 with the Garmin Striker 4 should do the trick. Thanks for your assistance!

I'm not 100% sure about the temp thing, but I remember that the version that I got stated that no temp will be measured... - my one is installed by glassing the base to the hull from inside it, fill with antifreeze and put the gauge on - I thing it work for over 100m with no issues - I prefer to be at the stern as in med style mooring stern depth sounder is more useful ... for temp I have one of this cheap temperature meters from ebay : www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1Pc-LCD-Digital-Thermometer-Temperature-50-110-Sensor-Aquarium-Freezer-Water/132341940408?hash=item1ed031c0b8:m:m0NpzE-5yT_wrVvl98koBuAglued to the hull and does a great job

It looks like the P79 with the Garmin Striker 4 should do the trick. Thanks for your assistance! Hi Brent, Did you end up going with the P79 and Striker 4 combination? If so, are you happy with them? This looks like a great option. I’d really love to know some more details if possible, like where you mounted the transducer and the striker units on your 42ds, and any problems installing etc. Best regards Wayne

Hi Wayne! I did not go through with this purchase. I'll update this thread if I do!

On my SO469, I installed a Raymarine CP100 Downvision sonar doing a shoot-through technique because I did not want to create a new hole in the hull. I placed it at the bottom of the stairwell in the front storage locker just behind the anchor, forward of the forward berth. I tapped along the bottom of the hull until I found a section that was solid fiberglass, put some mashed-up toilet bowl wax on the bottom/hull then mashed the transducer down on top of the toilet bowl wax. The wax serves to fill the air gap, you get nearly as good a shoot-through connection as using epoxy but the wax can be wiped up if you want to remove the transducer.

I replaced my old chartplotter with a chartplotter that came with a down vision fish finder. I used the hole from my old depth transducer to install it. Not wanting to make another hole in the hull, I took out my old Raymarine ST60 depthsounder transducer and stuck it inside the hull with a glob of silicone. It works great. Steve

You want backup depth measurement technology that will always work? Go old school!

Found a DSM300 that someone was selling at a good price. I’m going to hook it up to a P79 and link to my C80. Any thoughts on the best place to locate the in hull transducer?
