The windlass suddenly started making very bad noises when retrieving the anchor. Sounds like grinding, squealing, metal to metal. I've postponed crossing to the Bahamas until I get this issue resolved. The brand is GDI. There are no other markings on it. Does anyone have any info about the unit or the company? Perhap's even an owners manual? I inquired at Jeanneau America, but no response. Any help appreciated.
Thanks, Jay

An update. For any of you that, like me, have an older GDI windlass, take note.
As you may recall, mine SO 42.1 is a 1991. The windlass to my knowledge had never been disassembled or serviced. It suddenly began making some bad noises which sounded like grinding, metal to metal. When we arrived in Lake Worth, FL, I removed it and transported it to a service facility. Upon disassembly, there was a small amount of water inside and the grease (not a oil bath unit) was very thick, almost like candle wax.
They did a thorough job of cleaning and everthing looked just fine, so the motor was removed and sent out to and electic shop for inspection and the problem was discovered. The motor is a "permanent" magnet motor and the magnets are GLUED to the motor housing. Some of the magnets had fallen off and were laying on the armature. The brushes were in good shape and everything else looked fine. They reglued the magnets and we were good to go.
We're now in Nassau, Bahamas and continuing south to the Exumas in a few days.
Merry Christmas to you all. Jay & Diana
