When furling the mainsail on my 2006 SO 32i (lazy jacks, standard half batten main, single line reefing), I have to go to the mast and "help" the sail down-- if not it will flap at half-mast. To avoid leaving the cockpit whilst dropping the main ,I'm thinking of investing in a ball bearing/track system. These systems are expensive, and seem more suited to full batten mainsails. Does anyone have experience with these systems and semi-batten sails etc? Philip

Philip, you might want to try lubricating the sail slides and mast groove before considering more expensive fixes. I use a spray from Maplin Electronics which is PTFE and silicone lubricant. I spray the slides when the sail is down, and then raise and lower it a couple of times to spread the lubricant up the mast. I find this treatment allows the sail to drop nicely into the stack pack, and will last for at least half the season before requiring another dose.
A can of lubricant costs less than a fiver, so worth a go surely.

Hi! Im new to this but here goes. I had problems raising and lowering the standard 3/4 batten main on my SO37. I changed to Ronstan Ballslides on a full length batten main with excellent results. The ballslides run on the standard internal track so it was a small additional cost to the new main.

David Thanks for the tip -saving my pennies (well, centimes!) for a full batten main at the end of next season, when my current mainsail will be due for a change. At the Paris boat show last week I discussed on the Ronstan stand, and they said that these ballslides work well for fullbatten mains, but probably I wouldn't see a big improvement on my semi-batten one.
