took delivery of new (to us) 40DS a month ago. Not had in-mast furling before. We are having problems unfurling with the main getting stuck on way out. Also, very stiff. Have cleaned/lubricated mast track and all pulleys/blocks. Can someone give any advice as to best settings for kicker and topping lift to aid furling/unfurling?
Thanks.

We have just bought a 6 year old 43DS and had the same problem on our own shakedown cruise last month when the Harken outhaul sliding block jammed in the boom making it very difficult to pull the main out. We eventually removed the block from the boom and discovered that although the horizontal nylon rollers seemed fine there should have been 4 vertical rollers that had worn and fallen out. The local Doyle sailmaker franchise came to the rescue and repaired the block returning it the same afternoon - works fine now.

this is a very basic comment, but..... On our SO 42.1, we have to be on a starboard tack with the traveler full to port and the main sheet a little loose in order to unfurl or furl the main.

on my 43ds same problem. For unfurling i always go to the mast and pull out the first meters by hand. Than no problem anymore. If you release the little strengthener rope in the back side of the sail it becomes easier, but you have to think on it before furling!

1. Never furl in the main with the luff tensioner pulled tight. 2. Make sure the boom vang is loose and the main sheet is also loose, don't furl in under a great amount of tension. 3. When unfurling, again make sure that the main sheet is quite loose, let the sail luff or flap in the breeze. 4. Again don't have the boom vang tight. 5. We never controll both the outhaul and the furling line in unison... Let out a little and take in a little either way you go.
Good Luck

if ur going to furl or unfurl your mainsail...do it when your bow is head wind since your sail will be flapping a bit it would be easier to do so.
