I have a sun fizz 41ft built in 1984. It needs a new engine! The existing is a Perkins 4108 which is no longer made. What would be the ideal engine hp? I am toying with a Yanmar 52hp but that is expensive. I have also thought about a Vetus but that is only 42hp. Does anyone nave any ideas.

Whilst it is much smaller we have been pleased with our Nanni 21hp which is based on an industry standard Kubota Japanese diesel www.nannidiesel.comBeta marine also do Kubota marine conversions and offer very good value for money, also spares are much cheaper than Volvo/Yanmar and available because the Kubota units are used in many industrial installations worldwide www.betamarine.co.uk/Midrange.htm

I was also thinking about the Nanni. Is that 21 hp engine big enough to push the sun fizz 41 ft with its 16 tonnage? Are they a good engine?

Does anyone have a vetus engine I was proposing to purchase a 42hp engine. They seem economical to buy (compared to the like of the Yanmar). Has anyone had experience of this engine and can recommend it.

I have a 16hp yanmar in my Arcadia, and would not want anything smaller, I can not imagine one a bit larger in a boat twice the tonnage, and another 1/3 longer.
I have two yanmars, one in my boat, another in a trackhoe, and a kabota in my skidsteer ie bobcat 763. All three are good motors. Around here, ie puget sound area of NW US, Yanmar is the prefered refit, as the repair and parts availibility is almost every port. Where as Volvo, granted a bit better motor, harder to find parts. Also non turbo motors seem to be prefered over turbo hp equals.
There is a formula out there that will give you the HP you need based on tonage, and use, ie a racer will need a 20HP vs a 30 for a coatal cruiser vs 40 for a long distance cruiser. How fast youwant to go etc.

Even though the 4-108 is no longer made, it can be repaired or rebuilt. Perkin engines are very common and parts can be found worldwide. Having said that, the original Perkins on my Sun Legende 41 was replaced with a 40hp Yanmar 3JH3E and I´m very satisfied with its performance.

We have a Yanmar 55 on our SO 40. It gives us good speeds and pretty good economy. It now has 3,500 hours yes 3500. It does not smoke, starts on the button and has never let us down. We do use it for fridge charging and motor sailing when there is not a lot of wind which uses hours and the power certainly pushes through the big short waves of the Mditeranean> I certainly would not have a smaller engine on a forty foot hull, and its smaller than the 4108.

The 19hp Yanmar in the SF35 does a great job without drinking too much juice. Had a few lengthy deliveries home from abroad with no wind and plenty of iron topsail action. Got me in on fumes the other week.
At the laughable end of the scale I've got a Projection 762 which I race too (inshore). For those that don't know it's a 25footer (weighs 1300kg) and has a 4hp outboard engine that's frankly laughable (but light....). Can give us 5.5kts in absolutely flat water when all the way open. And can do that for about 20mins. So we sail everywhere.
