Goiot pedestal maintenance

Cautionary tale
This weekend fresh from launch, we had rather a scare with the throttle cable linkage on our 2001 SO34.2, which resulted in the whole gear lever/throttle on the Goiot pedestal jambing. I do recollect somthing similar being reported a couple of years ago on the Sailnet email list, but I ignored the advice.
The problem was due to corrosion of some of the plated steel internal parts, guess over the winter condensation had resulted in the mechanism corroding and jambing , so on launch whilst it worked (possibly slightly stiff) what was happening was the teleflex/morse cable was under sideways load/stress, resulting in a break of the outer cable. I did manage to take the bits apart and reuse sufficiently to get us back the 15 miles to our berth,
I will post some pictures on the main website for the next update in May, but in the interim if you have a Goiot throttle mechanism that is more than a couple of years ago you should think about some preventive maintenance. which is reasonably straightforward, as follows, remove the six Allen headed screws from the rear (you do not need to remove the lever), the unit is silicon sealed together so may need knife to release the seal, then grease the mechanism especially on the forward control cable around the outer cable clamp and pivot area. If you have a lot of rust you may need to take the unit to pieces, it is reasonably simple, but advise you take some digital pictures beforehand to ease reassembly.
Although there was rust I don't think mine actually needed totally replacing, I have just to replace the cable which I ordered today (about £45) glad it want in the North Sea though
Cheers
