As a new owner I am trying to find out how to instal a lewmar windlass on my new boat, I have bought the windlass and my local dealer says it is going to cost me in excess of £1200 to install because it is a complicated job because of the boat construction.any help or advice on the matter would be really appreciated.

Not familiar with the MF layout, but quite a bit of the cost will be getting the cables through - they need to be very large... and must calculated correctly for the length required, but it will be at least as big as car starter cable or perhaps welding cable - this diameter can be awkward to haul through neatly depending on what conduits and/or furniture you can hide it behind. I think first you need to calculate the approximate cable run length and route options, then get someone knowledgeable to calculate what mm2 section cable is needed for the power of the winch you have bought - better to over specify or you will have a big voltage drop which will result in the windlass not running efficiently If you can do the cable installation /routing this will reduce your costs quite a lot. Physically fitting the windlass to the deck should be reasonably straight forward - I think there was a step by step guide in PBO in recent months, if in any doubt at all get a marine electrician to advise you and complete the actually electrical side, even if you fit the unit and pull the cable through I think a possible alternative/ addition would be to fit an additional battery forward specifically for the windlass, you may then get away with smaller charging cables to charge the windlass, this may make routing the cables easiler/neater BUT I have not done this myself, so again get some professional views if in doubt PS this thread may help: www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?78535-Electric-anchor-winch-cable-size
