I am looking for new or used gennaker for my SO 45.2. Anyone have any experience with these on this boat? good, bad or indifferent is all useful to me.
Thanks,
Victor

Victor,
Next time you are in town, talk with jack at North sails. They are just north of gasworks parks on the north end of lk union. He built a gennaker/assymetric sail for my rig about 2 yrs ago. i do not have a sprit as you probably do not. But they still work reasonably well, when sailing from 90 to 140 or so off wind. In lighter airs, I can go more down wind, but my main when approaching 160-180 blankets the sail, so you lose some power. I have had it suggested, to go more deep down wind, ie the 160-180, to reef the main, and or use a pole and do a wing on wing setup.
I have a tack line that I can adjust from the cockpit, this is nice so one can get more play from the sail when using in different wind angles. Otherwise, one could use a stationary tack line, with no adjustment, but installing a moving tack line is a few hr job, and relatively easy, at least for my rig it was! I believe I have some pics of the tack line somewhere with out the sail up. No sail up pics at the moment:(

Marty,
Thanks I have seen the North Sails web site and their videos. Sounds quite good but just wanted to be sure I had covered all angles and possibilities.
I moved the boat up from Lake Union to Bellingham a week from today. We left at 4 am and got to Bellingham about 2 pm. We went up Swinomish Channel since there were gale warnings out for more open waters. As it was we had a good sail just Padilla Bay up to Bellingham with gusts up to 50 kts. A good way to find out what the boat likes and dislikes.
At one point I had a rudder stall that was a bit surprising. I am wondering if the rudder stops need adjustment so the rudder so it does not turn so much that it stalls. Have you had that experience too?
Thanks,
Victor

I did a nifty broach with my G2/full main up in 25+ knot winds the first saturday in Oct during a race! There were lots of us doing them from my 29'r to some 40+ footers. A santa cruz 70 hit 23 knots with there symetric up!
Not sure if what you are dealing with is a rudder stop issue, or a sail center of ________(fill in blank) iwant to say gravity, but know that is wrong word. As such, it it too far forward for the rudder to work. As such, another reef, or ruduction in sail would make the sails center of effort( is this the right word?) is correct, such that you will not stall and broach etc.
Anyway, my G2 is about 85-90% of max. Max is 680'ish for my rig, my sail is 590#. I get about 1-1.5 knots over my stock main and 142 genoa depending upon wind speed. The oct race, I hit 8+ with a 6.6 hull speed boat! Upper 7's were common. That is per knot meter, which I believe may be about .3-.5 slow in reading! if doing a long downwind run, you will gain some speed!

Centre of "Effort" is the word you're looking for marty!
Remember, you can massively de-power an asy by getting the snout line on hard.
Victor, your rudder will have stalled when the flow over it broke down. In a kite broach you can sometimes "shake" the flow back on again (particularly with a light boat).
As marty said though, you probably wanted to reduce sail or dump a good bit earlier.

So Tim,
Where you been? Hopefully sailing!
Center of effort is what I was thinking. Or is it "Centre" of effort? Or does the spelling of center/centre make the difference?!?!?!?! Too early in the morning here where I am. Foggy, but at least it will be sunny thru the weekend! ;D ;D ;D
have you had a chance to see that new SF3200 over their yet?

Hey Marty
Yep, been sailing - a lot! Not racing the Jeanneau much these days (the folks are cruising it more) so haven't been stopping by here so often. I've been racing a sportsboat I picked up a year ago most of the time and having quite a hoot.
