Following RORC's changes in this years minimum SSSN and STIX requirements for pretty much all levels of race along with the introduction of ISAF Appendix K (the variable ballast bit) a bunch of us JOD owners (with water ballast) were left wondering why RORC viewed our yachts with such a low stability rating; specifically 23 for SSSN and a RORC STIX (made up STIX) of 22.
We spoke with ISAF and the Rating office and then a whole bunch of very clever designers and naval architect type people and ended up commissioning Daniel Andrieu (the JOD35 designer) to produce accurate ISO STIX for our water ballast JOD's as well as JOD 35 standard form.
After many emails we received the final ok from the ratings office. Daniels detailed report was formally accepted. The results are as follows:
For Cat 1:
JOD 35 - No Water Ballast - AVS = 129.01, STIX = 33.38
JOD 35 - 290kg Water Ballast - AVS = 122.32, STIX = 32
For Cat 2:
JOD 35 - 500kg Water Ballast - AVS = 118.52, STIX = 30.94
Furthermore with the water ballast the ratings office have confirmed that we have all the right numbers at a Cat 0 level for ISAF Appendix K.
I am now going with the 290kg configuration.
As you can see from the numbers above a lot more events are now open to us. Given Daniels formal recognition of the water ballasted JOD (JOD35WB) we are now hoping we can get a few more JOD's in the shorthanded scene. It is a perfect starter boat at a sensible price.
The whole process started on the 31/01/2006 and has taken a little over 4 and a half months to complete.
