Hi,
I have a 90 model SM 44. The rudder on this boat is suspended(hinged?) in two locations: the rudder stock hull penetration, and to a rudder horn with a pintle at approx 1/3 oh the rudder height below the hull. I guess the pintle is a continuation of the rudder stock.
Anyway, on the rudder at the lower hinge there are two small cracks on each side of the rudder. The cracks are coming out on top and bottom of the hinge (called pintle on large ships, but I do not know for sailboats) and they are approx 20 cm long in an aftwards direction.
Have anyone seen similar cracks, and in case; what has been the repair method?
I have now sanded the rudder in to the gel coat in this area and I am planning to use epoxy and 20 cm wide glass fiber strips to reinforce on the outside. The cracks are 10 cm apart from each other (vertically), and the epoxy repair will be applied 30 cm up and 30 down. This is giving a approx 70 cm long glass fiber reinforcement . Is this a good plan?
Regards
Kjetil
