Does any one have the name of a refrigeration specialist who works anywhere from NW Spain to Gibraltar? We want to change the second 'cool' box on our 45DS to a fridge/freezer but need a specialist to fit the keel cooler, spill over fan and evaporator. We have the parts list from another 45DS.
We are presently in Viveiro and will be sailing to Gib before going in to the Med so anyone along that coast would be good.

Wel Ian I would definitly wait untill I reach Gibraltar. Dont get into the Britisch marinas over there since they are crowded and expensive. The Spanish marina La Linea has a big dry dock (on the hard) and i believe you can live aboard . Also fairly cheap prices, specially during the winter season. I wouldn' t be supprised you decide to stay there for the winter, very nice marina , lots of Englishmen . You can check the net for La linea and conditions. When you cross the border - Gibraltar - there is a small shipchandler close to one of British marinas. All is taxfree and I can tell you they have good prices for all kind of stuff. Very helpfull shipchandler , and english speaking . What more do you want. I'll see if I can find a receipt somewhere - also bought some things when we where there in the beginning of june.
You could order your stuff (call them) , pick it up and take it to La Linea . You can call this marina , they do speak English and ask them for a refrigeration specialist. I'm sure they will be able to help you.
If you would choose for Gibraltar , don't stall , remember it's oktober already . It can get very nasty on that coast with winds coming from the south.
Regards

Ian, have have just fitted a waeco series 90 compressor and vd16 deep freeze, cost around £600, time to install half a day.. Jeanneau quoted £1500 for their keel cooled system. Does it work? well the ice cream is rock solid at minimum setting temp in the med in August , maybe in the tropics it might struggle but as it's rated for a 200l freezer and the box can't be much more than 100l I'm happy. Installation wise in my DS50 which I'm sure has identical size fridge freezer as your DS45 , the vd16 does use more space than the standard one. I used power from the fridge comp under the oven, nice heavy cable and suitable inline fuse, so the normal fridge switch on the main panel controls both. It can be switch on and off at the unit. Comp is installed in locker under seat beside freezer box. Drill nice big hole to for copper pipes, used some of the removed insulation when drilled the hole, to plug the hole and sealant to seal it up tight. Lots of room for the installation as I have also installed one of my 16k btu AC units in the same locker. Up side is one less hole in the hull.
Ps I have just left Gibraltar, marinas no where near full, stayed for 3 months in the hope that Jeanneau would do some rectification work but would not accept any quotes from Sheppards for works as all too expensive, mind I don't know where they get their prices from ie £350 to reseal the gap between the eyebrow windows, no removal just 50cm of black sealant, and jeanneau to provide sealant. Since may delivery of the boat the only rectification work done, and the list is huge has been done by Marine Maintanance (the only Yanmar agent in Gibraltar) who were excellent , and I didn't bother with jeanneau or NYB C, just organised it myself. Ian if you want pics I can do next week, just done gib to marina Lanzarote, flew home yesterday but back on Saturday .
Pps the new Marina Lanzorote is going to be fantastic when finished, have a look at their website, all buildings are completed except for fitting out, official opening next Saturday, and I am told most units have been pre let.

Alistair, Dont know about work done by Sheppard , but you have to admit that compared with other chandlers his selling prices are not that expensive. Have you tried La Linea by the way ? I'm absolutely sure the Gib marinas can not compete with Linea prices. Next to that it is never really quiet in Gib., they also give a pilled up boat impression . Maybe low season is more relaxed. But opinions will differ of course.

The chandlers is fine, I'm referring to the yard which is expensive, and possibly without a home soon, certainly no lift outs. Not everybody can take their boats to La Linea, which no doubt is better and cheaper.. No sure why you called the Marinas in Gibraltar British, they are certainly not British owned, and in the boating world price is rarely an indication of quality. Queensway is quitter and cheaper than Marina bay, but each has their own attractions. I haven't visited many marinas along the southern coast of Spain but the ones I did seemed to be suffering big time from the economy in Spain lots of 'se vende' signs.

Ian -- we had reefer problems after our crossing. We got a guy who really knew his stuff in Lagos, Portugal. He had everything you will probably need and more. Not sure if we got his card or not but the marina found him for us.
As for the Gib area, we stayed at La Linea and you have to get the folks in Spain to work on your boat if you are in Spain. We lost our car for the main on the boom and got a new one sent in to Sheppards and tried to get someone in Gib to come and machine the end block that stops the car. None would do it as they said the minute they go to La Linea marina the folks come have a chat with them.
