I'm about to take the plunge on a crusader furl maxx sail. I've researched vertical Battens and most are not suitable for the zspar mast, primarily due to the narrow slot. Crusader have a product using lots of 4mm carbon round battens, which a re bunched to provide the required strength. The cloth is vectron and they state it is suitable for the zspar mast section.
Has anyone any experience of this crusader product, or the vectron sail cloth?
Compared to a premium non battened Dacron sail its an extra £1000 for the battens and vectron cloth- which seems reasonable vfm?

Kemp Sails made a sail for a friends 45DS with short leech battens. He tells me that it furls and unfurls very easily. I spoke with Matt Aitkens at Kemp's Gosport office. He tells me they've made quit a few of this type of sail for Z-Spar masts. When I spoke to him at the Boat Show he showed me a new material they are about to use which should allow full length battens in a Z-Spars mast. I have a quote which seems ok. I also know there delivery and service is excellent. If your spending that kind of money give Matt a call, before you commit. Ian

Many thanks I'll give Kemp a ring and see what they can offer.

Kemp did my battened in mast main. Goes in and out easily and keeps it shape much better. Definitely worth talking to them.

The furl maxx was installed on Tuesday and the initial impression is 'wow'. The sail arrived with the battens installed and rolled up in a big hoop. Compared to the old sail this has so much roach and I cannot wait to get out and try it. Niggles: It is a little tool long in the luff so will need to go back at some point to be adjusted. I can furl in and out by hand but it does jam a bit on then first batten pocket, in the long term a may stitch in the battens and do away with all the Velcro pocket that is bulking it out.
I'll report back how it looks under sail.

I rigged my new batten mainsail and genoa from Elvströmsails yesterday. It was only light winds, but the shape looks so much better than the old original sails. (The boat is a SO44i 2009.) Attachment Deleted

Can you provide a bit more details about your new sail from Elvstrøm. Is it EMS, EMS-MAX or Fatfurl?
How many additional squaremeters did you get compared to the standard in-mast sail?

Hi Steen.
The sail is ECL (Elvstrøm cruising laminate) 6 layers 465 g/m2 made for long distance crusing. The size now is 44m2, the original was 38,1m2.

Thanks Martin
Would be great to hear more when you have furled it a few times - both in light wind and in a bit more wind
