After leaving the boat for a few days found that the handle on the small Lewmar hatch in aft cabin had dropped off.. I will speak to them tomorrow to see what options to rebond are - but surprised that unlike the larger hatches the clamp is not through bolted but relies on a mastic type bond Anyone had this issue before? or advice on rebonding acrylic to the plastic handle? www.23hq.com/Jeanneau/photo/57298998/original

Same thing happend to me with the forward head hatch, had forgotten to close it when out sailing and the rope just ripped it off. Drilled a small hole in the glass and put in a stainless screw with washers and some marine sealant, never been a problem since :-) But I don't remember if it looks exactly the same as the one you have in the picture but I would think so. I would try to find as big a washer as possible (large diameter) to spread the load on the glass.

Hi Xlnt
Thanks for that. Looking around on Google it is a far from uncommon issue. I have just spoken to Lewmar who said that the hatch has now been redesigned and all have through bolting rather than glued on, he said if I tried to re-glue it was unlikely to last and their recommendation was to fit a new "lens" complete with new handle but as the list price for the hatch is around £200 guess the spares will be silly money as well, so plan to do a you have and through bolt...

Another option is to fit a replacement handle from Lewmar that is through bolted - it will mean drilling a sizeable hole in the acrylic which is no mean feat in itself. This assumes that the recent designs will match catch positions etc. Cost is significantly less than a new lens and handle.

Great to read about these possibilities. Thank you Xlnt and Sitara. Our forward head latch also dropped off quite early on. Dealer suggested araldite glue. It seemed satisfactory for 4-5 years albeit that we were always nervous that it would just drop off again - which it has. Twice within the last 6 months in fact. Will look at screw option. We think the position of the furling line catches the edge of the lens and in addition to slightly deforming the hinge (latch needs to be turned a long way now to properly close) it has put extra pressure on the latch connection. Luckily it only leaks in heavy weather and is over the heads and therefore contained. The salt water has played havoc on the blind/ insect screen rollers though.
Very glad to know that Lewmar recognise there was a design problem.

Since our last post, the latch has again fallen off. Now for the 3rd time this year! We have adapted the bolt/screw -through solution suggested by Sitara. Instead of bolting the latch we have tapped & threaded the holes for some screws into the lens plus added epoxy glue for good measure to prevent sea water contact with the screws. We really hope we've nailed it this time! SV Zofia
