Has any one removed the cap on a Z-spar mast, and generally speaking how does it come off, preferably still standing on the boat. I've have gotten the impression I can remove the cap to replace a broken halyard sheave. This did not appear as simple as the diagram....then again, when you have not done something before, it is always a "Am I doing this right?" moment.
I'm going to replace all 4 sheaves, both pins as everything is almost 30 yrs old, so if one is broken, who's to say the other 3 are not right behind.
Then I need to replace the mast head lights too. Bulb # thoughts? it is a double bulb setup.....
Thanks Marty

Hello Marty, I have a SO37.1 from 1995, also with Z-spar. Have worked a bit on the masthead although I don't find any of the numerous pictures taken on that part... The pins goes into two tracks that are a bit wider on top then further down so it is quite easy to get the sheaves up. Don't forget to secure the lines though first!! ;-) I'll see if I can dig up some pictures on it as they will enlighten it all. BR, Per

oh... and if you are not extremely tall you will find it quite difficult to get them off while still standing on the boat ;-) :-P :-D

So you see the two haleyard lines going over the sheaves. It is just to lift up the lines and secure them (important, otherwise lot of extra work) and thereafter one can just pull up the sheaves. Be careful to not loose the pins. No need to remote anything else. Easy job :-)

THanks for the pic. Your top is a bit different than mine, I do not have the part with the sheaves you have. Mine are in the part stuck in the mast, with a flat piece of metal at the very top. But as you describe, the removal and replacement of the sheaves and pins is what I planned to do, hanging at the top of the mast mind you as I am not quite as tall as the mast. TOo bad I can not get inches per say to equal feet off the deck somehow!
That pic does help a bit more than what I have been working with.
Or as I am typing, does the part with the sheaves pull up from the middle? looks more like it is always above the top of the mast area. If it pulls up, that would make this easier yet once I am secure at the mast head and can get my head and arms above.

It might be we have same top, it looks like a flat piece at top when looking from below. As you need to take take them out in pair I guess you need some platform so the haleyards are loose, which you normally lift yourself up to top with. Good luck! ;-)

Thanks for info, this could be easier/harder in some cases than I thought......
I seem to be getting a better picture of what to expect when I get up there next to remove everything.
I doubt we have the same top/mast per say, unless you have a 304 mast section. I seem to recall that number off the top of my head........
