How about becoming a RYA member and using Bishop Skinner for insurance? I've just negotiated a deal to sail from Scotland to Gibraltar at just over £700 for the year which includes a number of extras and is outside of BS's standard sailing area. They also do a good travel insurance package.

Mentioning insurance premiums is only of interest if one can relate them to insured values.
So, the 820 euros and or 700GBP are based on what insured value?

Also do get quotes from Topsail - they will insure jeanneau's almost anywhere in the World and will give a true 10% discount if you let them know you are part of the Jeanneau Owners Network jeanneau-owners.com/discounts.htmlThey also do some good personnel yachting insurance packages for things like health etc

Malcolm, do you know by any chance if Topsail insures extended single hand cruising? (ocean crossings etc)

Malcolm, do you know by any chance if Topsail insures extended single hand cruising? (ocean crossings etc) They certainly do long distance cruising, but don't know if that would include single-handed. I would email Chris for his advice at chris@topsailinsurance.com I am sure he will be as helpful as possible M

At the present that would be 120.000 Euro in my case , the gradual decrease of boat-value is taken into account of course. My premium is based on more than 4 year ' no claim ' , that means I get a discount of 40%. All in all a fair price I would imagine , be it that even for my boat I need to provide a professionnaly installed gps anti-theft device. No need for that last year ,rules have changed so it seems Very curious about other insurance premiums though. Happy to read more opinions. Regards

Sailblue: I think the premium is nor cheap nor expensive, so about right. I pay 440 euros, based on 82.500 euros. This is for the whole Mediterranean Sea and up to the Canaries, also with full no claims discount. My excess is 750 euros.
If anything your insured value of 120.000 is maybe a tad high, but this is a choice one makes. If you would look at the current market value, you would be lucky to get 80k (if sold via a broker). I have access to the actual sales prices yachts have sold for (brokers voluntarily register the actual sales prices on yachtworld.com, not visible to the public) and it is mind blowing what prices some yachts actually sold for compared to their asking prices.
(By the way: I am not a broker, just have access to this info via a friend who is a yacht broker).

Yes that's the same as we were quoted for. We have an endorsement to increase our area for this summer at £700. If we decide to head beyond Gibraltar BS will help with that as well.

Just to keep this topic going a little longer we have also looked at leaving our house empty over the summer. Our policy allows 45 days. Not enough for what we want to do. I phoned the insurer and asked what the cost would be for 90 days - £31 plus £25 admin fee. I then asked for 120 days and 150 days the price was the same but I couldn't do over 150 days. That will be enough for this year.
We've also taken out Travel Insurance which allows a maximum of 62 days with BS at £179 for the year. The broker has already told us that the 61 days can be increased.
Now to look at annual Hire Car excess insurance.

Hi Sailblue: my insurer is not a secret, so I am happy to share. My SO40 is insured with Gallagher Heath Insurance Services and they deal with Allianz. They are based in Liverpool. I have had several yachts insured there (via my work) and they have always given good prices and when there was damage, never experienced issues with paying out. My contact there is Alison Melia (say hello from Marco from Mallorca!). Just ask for a quote and who knows it is worth your while.
But I cannot stay with them, once I start my cruise. The will not insure singlehanded (world) cruising. Looks like Pantaenius will be my next insurer as there are very few that insure this sort of thing.
Marco
