I just purchased a 2004 Sun Odyssey 40.3 with the Yanmar 4JH3E 56-HP. Not sure what the top end RPM is for safe motoring. It has a three-blade Maxprop.
The highest RPM so far has been 2700 with no problem - boat speed about 7.2. Is it safe to go 3000 to 3200, or higher for long periods?

Most Yanmars I have encountered, the max HP is rated at 3600 RPM. The local Yanmar dealer suggests 80% of that number for cruising=2800.
I typically cruise at 24-2500 with an occasional runup to 3600 for 10 to 15 min's to clean out the carbon.

Thanks - We have another week of sailing here on the Great Lakes before we lay the boat up and I'll try a little higher RPM and see how the boat preforms.
I had a surveyor tell me a mechanic told him that up to 90% was OK. The engine is rated up to 3600 RPM as he mentioned.
Thanks

I suggest you run it a WOT and see if it will attain 3600 RPM's. After I installed my maxprop, the engine would not run up to 3600.
The pitch of the prop was not correct. Re-setting the pitch corrected the problem. It is not advisable to over load the engine with too much pitch.
