I am not normally one for wishing my life away, but I am counting down the days until my 349 arrives. I think she gets built in the next two weeks, then I get the invoice for 65% and she gets shipped to Australia.

New forum member here...
AND new 349 owner!!!!
Looking forward to hearing what others are up to with this model.
Mine is in the water. Hull #34 I believe. We fitted the dodger today. We'll be adding some rigging next week. She'll have a 180 asymetrical on her with a top-down furler.
I fell in love early with this boat since she reminds me too much of an I14 [which is how I misspent many younger years].
I'm excited but still reeling from having spent more on a boat than I did on my house [in downtown Seattle].
Any PNW members out there feel free to ping me if you want to go sailing.
Cheers-
David Seattle, WA

David,
did you buy the boat MSC brought in for the last boat show? I'd luv to try and get my wife to like one of them, likes the 409 better.........
and if you do not belong to a local YV, check out Edmonds YC. There is currently 3 of us with Jeanneau's, and a 4th bought bartaville, the 36i from MSC that they had also.

Singoviv- congrats! I bet thta'll be a long 10 weeks ;-)
Marty- Yes it was the one at MSC. Saw it the first night of the boat show and fell in love on the spot. She was already pushing what I wanted to spend so I didn't even set foot on the 409 [also a pretty boat]. But hey does the 409 have a separate shower?! [try that on the wife].
I am excited about this boat. I almost resolved myself to buying two boats - one to cruise and one that would be fun to sail. I think the 349 will serve both purposes well. She is very lively under foot but not in a way that feels tweaky.
We had her out in a quirky day[12 knots with gusts to 20 - wind shifting from South to almost due East] and she was pretty darn amazing. Heeling hard in a gust you can actually take your hands off the helm. Very stable. But tacking she felt like a dinghy - with the short sheeting angles and the friction rings one person can easily pull the jib 90% of the way through, settle in on the new tack and take up the slack once settled. Part of the reason I liked this is because the gals that I tend to wind up with don't know how to sail and I wanted to drive everything from one place - no dancing back and forth across the cockpit. I am hoping to be able to fly the kite shorthanded as well! [stay tuned on that one]
A couple of unsolicited thoughts on options/rigging:
The mainsheet bridle seems to attract a bit of response. As an ex dinghy guy I say: "someone finally got it right!" It is the best, simplest, cleanest way to get the boom on centerline. As far as leach control - that's what the kicking strap is for.
This boat had the berth under the cockpit ordered. I have dubbed it "The Harry Potter Berth". and originally I was going to delete that option. However, I kept it in the end - it will serve well to park a drunk friend or if I take the nieces out as an extra spot. It serves that purpose for that 10% of the time when you think I wish she was just a little bit bigger.
The boat also had the backstay on it. Which I am not sure it needs. However on that squirley day it was a quick way to take slack out of the forestay - which was nice. I also think it might be instrumental with the kite. The debate I have is I would like a bigger main. To solve this I might go with a whip at the top ala Melges boats. Also a note to those considering not having a downwind sail - seriously think about a bigger main.
We are putting on the jib twings here. Pretty simple mod that should be very worth it.
The dealer here is a big proponent of our locally made dodgers as they are more fitting for the soggy conditions we have. However, all our local canvas makers want $300 a wheel for wheel covers. Harken makes a 32" cover for under 70 - they'll be here next week and I'll let you all know if they fit.
Best to all!

Pics are coming soon. We should be adding some of rigging for the kite next week so I'll grab some of that. Also, some might be interested ...I went with a Selden pole as opposed to the factory sprit. I thought the factory looked meh. Imo.

monday,
I thought the 349 in some ways was better than the 409. Wife on the other hand.......I think the 349 as you note will be a better SH boat vs the 409 with out some serious rerigging. I was looking at an SO37 earlier today, could not figure out how and SF37 had a cockpit traveler that worked with a dodger......then looked up specs, the boom is another 1.5' longer.....that makes sense now.....still re doable, just not simply! or buy an sf boom, gain 50SQft of main area.......hmmmmm.....now to get spouse to buy into this........

Oooo. A bigger boom. I like that.
But for general cruising I'm not sure the traveler would be worth it (at the expense of clogging up the cockpit). Even for racing the vang should give enough control.
However, this conversation is seriously making me consider bringing the vang back to the helm.

Bring it back! much easier to change from the cockpit.
I also race frequently with a crew of 5-6 folks. So it is easier to have a cockpit mounted control. Not sure the current system on the SO37 or the 349 would allow constant dousing in 15-40 knot winds if you are pushing things in gusty conditions. Can not imagine trying to do that thru a clutch via a winch. That could tie up a cabin top winch pretty quick, or the cockpit winches, when you want them for a genoa etc.

Marty-
Is the boat in the article actually yours? [The dog almost matches]
15 clutches! that's confusing.
d
PS. good point about playing lines with a clutch and winch. I do have to keep reminding myself that it is not actually a dinghy :-)

Mr Winston is about 5 months old in both pics. Could not believe we got him to sit in the bow when that pic was taken. Usually GOB uses pics without live creatures for the cabin shots. It was a cute shot!
So yes, that is my actual boat.
now to get used to sea level air, been at 6-9000' the last few days. Altho not able to do the other water sport I luv, snow skiing. Temps were 0-5f with winds in the 20-30 mph ranges, puts wind chills in the -20F range. Probably pretty close to -20C for those using that scale........

I think my baby gets released from the factory this week to start its long journey to Sydney. Seeing those pictures from PBS of Team Jeanneau makes me even more excited.
I even had an invite to sail on Team Jeanneau last week which I had to turn down due to work commitments:( The pics show perhaps a little too much prebend on the mast with those wrinkles on the main.... Still want the performance main tho' ... It looks good.
