My 2008 SO 39i came with an auxiliary switch on the electrical switch/meter panel. I would like to fit masthead nav lights and the wire is there at the masthead. Being on a circuit board, it is hard to see if anything is attached to the switch and turning it on doesn't appear to do anything.
Does anyone know what this switch does or is intended for?

Different boat, but everything is very similar so this may help...
On the 36i there is nothing connected to the auxiliary switch from the factory. On the hull behind the switch board, left of the black distribution blocks, there is a translucent white terminal strip which takes female blade connectors. This is where you can connect things into the auxiliary switch. (the navigation equipment is also wired to this strip- but electrically separate to the aux power)
This should be shown in the factory electrical diagrams. Look for a red wire with "AUX" printed on it.
If I remember correctly there is a blade fuse in the back of the switch panel for the Aux power supply.

Thanks for this, J. I was wondering the same thing.

Thanks for that. Yes, the block is there and attached to it are:
2 Red wires 1 Black wire 1 Red wire of much lighter gauge 1 Black wire of much lighter gauge
This block of male connectors holds these wires (fitted with female connectors) but at this stage the other side has no through connection.
My manual shows the heavier gauge wires to be connected to the bow nav lights. The unconnected wire at the mast head is part of a three wire set and is obviously for the single bulb 3 way nav light. The other two are for the anchor light and black earth. The foot of the mast has a sticker saying that there is a wire in the mast for the nav lights.
One red wire in the above block is marked AUX and becomes live when the Aux switch is turned on. The other red wire does not receive power when either the nav lights or Aux are turned on. This wire is connected to something because it passes a current and can't be the unconnected wire to the masthead unless something else is also connected. Perhaps compass lights in tandem with the normal bow nav lights.
The idea is to have the auxiliary switch turn on the masthead nav lights. The normal bow and stern nav lights are then turned off. Shame that the steaming light can only be used with the bow nav lights.
I cannot understand why this wasn't a factory/commisioning agent option. They have to drill holes for the anchor light and could just as easily do a 3 way/anchor combo. Much safer in big seas.
I will try to locate what the non-Aux wire turns on but would appreciate any more info.

First of all , there is an extra lead provided by Jeanneau , its marked as ' OPT '. Infact I also installed mast led nav lights this winter since my mast is still down. Ran a new 3-lead cable to replace the 2-lead original one that provides the anchorlight. I decided to install two separate Nasa Supernova Led , I wasn't charmed by the combo. The standard controle panels are not designed for reverse polarity switching ,exactly what the combo needs. I also like to switch the anchor and mast nav lights separatly. Therefor I needed to make my own lighthouse so to speak. As you can see , the base of the tricolor is glued to the top of the anchor light. I did not trust this fixing to withstand the windforces and supplied an extra support where the tricolor lead can be tywrapped on to. By the way , its perfectly legal to have the mast and bow nav lights on together you know , just replace the bow navs by leds and you'll stick out like a full moon on a clear night sky. Regards

Hello Sailbleu,
That is a really great stainless bracket for mounting those lights. That will withstand all the forces and give very long service. Under the colregs however, it is specifically stated that both sidelights and tricolour shall not be exhibited at the same time.
Regards,
Trevor
