Hi Does anyone know what the largest bottle size that will fit in the gas locker on my SO42DS and where to buy one? Hopefully somewhere that ships internationally?
Thanks

I purchased a Lite Cylinder 10 lb Propane Cylinder that fits perfectly and you can see through it to know the fuel level. Paid US$110 delivered to CA.

Hi Xint, We found that gas bottles are not made to standard dimensions. The 2 kg bottles that are the largest that will fit in our SO30i vary in height by a couple of centimetres within the batch in any one outlet let alone between brands.
We also found that our connection installation added more height than necessary from the minimum possible.
We found out all this when our re-filler gave us back the wrong bottle but close enough that we did not notice until we had to change bottles much later. Note, label your bottle very clearly if you have to leave them for filling. We tried many outlets to buy a bottle low enough for our locker with no success. Some friends have had similar problems with different boats.
Finally a gas and welding equipment supplier was able to supply and properly seal some extra fittings that put the regulator diaphragm in the vertical plane thus reducing the overall height so we could use the new 2 kg bottles.
Lesson, first measure the inside height of your locker, then measure how much your connectors increase the height of the bottle, finally take a straight ruler to put across the top of the bottles and a tape measure when you go to buy.
I gather that either your boat or location may not suit this procedure, so you may have to buy a bit smaller bottle to do the job until you can make the necessary measurements. Then use it on the home bar-b-que.

The largest my SO42i will take is 7kg Butane/10kg Propane (they are the same size bottles but the gases don't weigh the same.) They have the push-fit type connectors, which fit inside the handle/valve protector on top of the bottle, so don't protrude above the bottle. Propane is better if you use it through the winter as it has a lower operating temp. than Butane.

Don't think any of the AGA will fit, if memory serves me right the diameter in the locker is aprox 270mm pr bottle, The height I can't remember. Can anyone confirm dimensions?

xlnt,
Having gone thru something like this, I am curious about where you are located and what sort of setup you have in your current gas locker (i.e., US connections, or european camping gas connections?). This is also a big consideration.
I have two standard US aluminum 10 lbm tanks, and US connections, and I refill them at autogas stations, using an adaptor that I purchased from the UK.
Ahhh - I just found your post with the note that you are in Norway. So, what have you been using till now for gas.

The boat came originally from the Netherlands so it is equipped with some sort of euro threads on the reducer and the only place close enough where I can get a bottle that fits both the locker and threads is in Sweden. The bottle is not refillable and has to be swapped each time and a swap is about £80/650NOK and it is only 2,5 kg of gas. here is how it looks like: i696.photobucket.com/albums/vv329/pep242/BOTELLA-CAMPING-GAZ-907-VACIA-R-006.jpg Here In Norway the bottles that will fit the locker is even smaller, I think they are about just 2 kg I don't worry to much about the threads, I can fix some connectores that will fit.

xlnt, that looks like the standard european 'camping gaz' bottle with the screw thread connector. My 2007 42i had two of those in the gas locker under the stb helmsman seat. I would guess that your locker would be the same as mine so should take the 7kg butane/10kg propane bottle as per my link. The push fit connectors are much easier to use and eliminates the possibility of getting the screw threads cross threaded (like I did!)

Thanks for the tip Seagem. Do you know if these have the venting hole on top so they can be filled pretty easy or is this also one of those that has to be swapped?

If you can fit the Calor bottle I should be able to fit the AGA KVA-6 Aluminium bottle which is sold and refilled in my area :-)

Hi xlnt, The ones I have are the type that are exchanged for full ones. You have to pay for the bottle the first time but after that its just exchanged and you pay only for the gas. I would recommend using the 10kg propane, if you can get it, as it works better in colder climates.

Just changed my JSD43 from camping gas to propane i have the double aft bottle locker and it only took the small 4kg propane, took the locker out and managed to extend the depth of the aft bottle space about 150mm to take the 6kg bottle i also split the hose in the locker so i can swap the regulators and use butane if needed. bit of an effort but the savings are nice
