I often sail single handed and am looking a rode counter on OD , in the cockpit. Has anyone done this and have any tips re models, connections and things to look out for ?

If you are retro-fitting a counter to an existing windlass then, regardless of which you choose, you'll have to affix a small magnet to the gypsy. While on my previous boat I opted to put in a remote control I didn't have the tools to put in that magnet. It worked quite well, I would anchor from the cockpit singlehanded and let out what felt like "enough" chain, then would go forward and let out more until I found a marker on my chain and knew how much I'd let out. Weighing anchor was done from the bow, as that wasn't quite as time-critical as the other way. Do you currently have a remote in the cockpit? If so, which model do you have?

I think it is the same model that I had; I did the cabling for the remote myself and the most work was drawing the cable, the electrics are quite easy. I don't have any particular recommendation, although the model fro the same manufacturer would be best.

I had one that was factory installed and had it removed. The salt water that comes with anchoring effected the magnet and caused errors in counting. I went back to the old method of using painted chain and cable ties for distance measurement. Tried to sell the unit and was told they did not want it as they had 14 in stock and could not sell any.

Take a look at the thread I started on chain counter repair. I believe the last post was in early December.

Thanks All
Seems like more hassle and expense than its worth. Will probably revert to the old painted chain method after all. Thanks a million though.

I have a Quick remote with a chain counter. Had a problem on the 50 DS in the beginning with the counter. By installing a new magnet and covering it with epoxy (suggested by Quick, not the dealer who now uses this process) I have had no further problems. This is a great concept for single handling.
