Hi All, The matt black border which goes on the outside of my S/O 37 windows is fading and flaking off. I have been thinking of having it re-sprayed as it looks really tatty!! I went for the other option this weekend.... buffed the border completely off so that it is all Gloss!! I've only done one side - but I think it looks 100000000000 times better (and will never flake ever again ) Before and after pics....... Regards Ian

Regards Ian Ian - looks fantastic, was this all done by hand or did you use a polisher?

1 stage - polishing compound applied with a rag!! rather time consuming!! 2nd stage - for the stubburn bits I used a 400 wet n dry just to go through the paint - Don't worry if you go on the the perspex - it will polish up! 3rd stage - now that all the border is off, I used the polishing compound again but this time on a buffer to make it all nice n shiney!! I did try various orbital polishers, but the above steps proved (for me) to be the best way. As for the compund - things like T cut are NOT harsh enough, you need a proper cutting compound. Hope this helps Regards Ian

I haven't checked but is it possible that the matt black border prevents UV from damaging the sealant holding the perspex in place?

I haven't checked but is it possible that the matt black border prevents UV from damaging the sealant holding the perspex in place? Unfortunatly the black borders are not up to the task of shielding the UV. Maybe Jeanneau should of coated the black borders with a UV protector ;-) It's like Ian said , when the black is fading it looks awfull. Good job Ian , you tempt us in doing the same . But I think I'll just sit on my hands for a while , please let us know when your windows start falling out. Just joking ofcourse. Regards

I'll let you know if the windows fall out!!!! To be honest I have no idea why this matt black border is there!! On the inside of the perspex there is a gloss black border which hides the sealer. On the Port side rear window this gloss part is exposed for about 6 inches (see attached pic) - as this part has NOT faded in the last 11 years, I'm hopeful this isn't going to happen on the rest of the gloss border. Keeping my fingers crossed!! Ian

Regards For what it's worth, one of my windows on my 2003 SO 35 did start to fall out. While getting repaired, my boatyard said the border was indeed there to protect the sealant from UV damage. Regardless, it took about an hour to mask off border, but I just resprayed with a plastic compatible semi-gloss spray paint and it looks fine.

I removed the paint from my boat over 2 years ago. Looks much better. I also contacted Jeanneau regarding the paint first as I was wondering about UV.
I sent an email to Gilles at Jeanneau US and received the following response.
"The fixed portholes on the SO40 were supplied from Goiot with a flat black acrylic outline. This outline is cosmetic; the portholes are fastened with Sikaflex 295 UV which is UV resistant."
