We installed a bow thruster on 2006 42DS last April. While it was expensive ($10,000 US) it was a great investment since we typically double hand when crusing and docking is now a breeze intight marinas with cross winds.

I had a 49DS and usually singlehanded. Initially the bowthruster was INOP (due to bad batteries and corroded connections) and docking alone was ... challenging ... After I fixed the bowthruster and used it I asked myself how I'd survived without it. It is a worthwhile investment indeed. I noticed that the big boys - the 53 and 57 - had bowthruster shafts molded into the hulls and if ordered without one they would just plug the holes. I wonder if they are now doing that for the 49 as well since I would guess that most purchasers will end up getting one.
Since the lateral shaft is a hole in the hull I would only want to have this done by proven shops. If done correctly it strengthens the bow area, if done badly you will have constants small leaks.
