I recently bought a 1999 SO 45.2 with an in-mast furler. It is slow and does not point well. I like to do club races in the non spinnaker division. I am planning to replace the mainsail and genoa. I am considering a standard roach mainsail with "air battens" from UK/Halsey. Any opinions about these versus vertical batten sails? Steve

Steve, standard roach mainsails have a better shape and also more area than your current mainsail. This will make the difference in the club race. I have a standard roach mainsail on our SO36i and would not like to have anything different. Rene

Thanks Rene for your response.
I have decided to go with a standard roach mainsail with air battens. They are inflatable battens in a standard configuration and inflate after the sail is rolled out and deflate to furl the sail. The top 2 can be deflated individually to allow for reefing. I should get it in about 3 weeks. I will make a new post after I get it to let anyone interested know how it sails.
