The standard holding tank on SO40s built around the turn of the century is small, to say the least. Has anyone replaced this tank with a larger one? If so, where did the new tank get placed?

Where is yours placed and how much can it hold ? I have a 40DS , not sure if our cabin layout is the same , but I have 2 (SS) holding tanks about 40 liters each. One is located in the aft cabin locker , that one is being fed by the central head. The other is in the bow head's locker. I lost 2 lockers to store waste ,...isn't that a sh*tty thing.

Have a look back at this thread; jeanneau.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=eq&thread=1742&page=1Mine are located behind the lockers in both the bow and midships heads. Interestingly, Hoppy's midships locker has an infill that doesn't reveal the cavity behind where mine has been situated. Midships head's holding tank is 40.5 Ltrs, and the bow one is 45.36 Ltrs. There is room to make them a little larger but not hugely. Somewhere on the web I saw some info about how to calculate much water it actually took to clear the bowl, as well as the pipe to the holding tank (I guess this is really just the volume of the bowl plus the volume of the pipe running from the bowl outlet to the head of the holding tank (length and radius of the pipe)?). With that sort of info, you could make a rough guesstimate as to the appropriate size tanks to install. So far, our tanks have been up to the task but we are not usually anchored in one spot for that long and when in a marina or port, we use shoreside facilities as much as possible. Hope this helps. PT.

PT,
Your assessment seems right. The capacity of the tank on the boat that we are contemplating buying is near 40 liters. For the majority of our use, that would seem OK by logic, but it is not my analysis as an engineer and skipper that drives the ultimate opinion on this. The Admiral perceives a tank to be full when it's merely half so - and I don't expect the installation of tank fill sensors to change that view much.
The tank existing on the candidate boat looks identical to the one in the pictures found in the thread you referenced. This boat has only one head, amidships between the nav station and the aft berth on the port side.
Thanks for the info.
