Does anyone have any idea how thick the hull of a 43DS is, just aft of the engine? I want to install a Dynaplate, and the best location for my situation seems to be just to starboard of the shaft seal where there is a relatively flat spot in the bilge. I have the Dynaplate, and a backing plate (a plastic piece), and when I look at the bolts, I am not quite sure they will be long enough. But I don't know how thick the hull is in this location - 1", 2"??

I would be very surprised if it was anymore than 1" as when I fitted our Ionguard in a similar place on our 39 it was maybe 20mm

My 42DS was less than 1" thick. I installed my Dynaplate just forward of the engine on the starboard side near the galley as it was accessible for easy inspection and not far from the nab station

Thanks guys. I will be hauled in 10 days, and can now drill away with confidence...

I drilled a hole through the hull of my 36i to fit an anode and found it to be only about 3cm thick but there was a gap between the outer and the inner skins. If water gets into this void it might do real damage. If you drill through your hull I suggest to make sure that there is no gap between the layers of the hull. If there is any gap or void, I would be sure to fill it with resin and then re-drill the hole. I drilled trough from below, then took a 3 cm cylinder of the inner skin ( only) out from inside the boat with a tank cutter, taped over the outside hole and then filled from above using resin and glass beads. Let it set then re-drilled the original hole. This way no water is likely to get into the core if any of your bolt holes leak slightly. Good luck!

Peter,
Thanks for the info. Your method is the one I use when drilling thru a deck, and I will also use it for the hull, as well. I don't think that the hull is cored, but it is never a good idea to provide a path for water into an inter-skin area.
Also, a question for our web-masters - what did I do to put this post up on the "sticky" section? I didn't do it intentionally, but somehow it is there, and does not need to be.
