Looks like UV light has got to the stitching. I recommend a UV cover to protect this part of the main. Regards

Same guys who said it would end (twice) in 2011, and finally decided to save face and declared that it had, in fact, ended the second time!

Marty, ouch ... How did this happen?
I am happy to report that the sail has been fixed. The damage was $70 and 3 nights of the empty furler banging inside the mast!! I am not the most popular guy around the marina this week.

That was a "hold my beer watch this" moment! We were going around the race mark in 30-40 knot winds, double reefed when I realized the current was pushing me towards the mark to port, tired to go starboard a bit, wind caught the boom, major hard gybe full from one side to the other, boom snapped after hitting the lower port shroud.
no one was hurt, did bale on the race. We were looking forward to the return with a double reef main and seeing how a storm jib worked, but was not able to try it. We did later in some similar winds.

I am not the most popular guy around the marina this week. Only $70? That's not too bad. Sailmakers over here would have charged you double. Anyway glad you survived Friday the 13th! Now on for the Maya Calendar Re - Marty's broken boom: an uncontrolled gybe in 30-40 knots? You were lucky not to lose your mast!

Ted,
Very true. Glad overall it was a US $700 complete boom replacement. Unfortunately, shipping from the US ZSpar outlet, was about as far as one can be in the US. Florida in the SE to Washington state in the NW! As you say, could have been way worst!
