My boat is out of the water and there is a bit of movement up and down. The bearing that is in place appears to be rubber or plastic sleeved. Can anyone please advise.. Where in the uk I can get a new bearing Do I need to take off the rudder and pull the shaft out and if so how is that done? Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks

I replaced the cutlass bearing on my now ex SO 29.2 last year. I was expecting all sorts of hassles, eg removing shaft, dropping rudder etc but there were none. I obtained a factory replacement bearing from www.jeanneauspares.com and they had it mailed to Australia within a week. It is a solid rubber bearing (no brass) held in place with two plastic grub screws. I removed the two grub screws from the original bearing, levered it out a little using a screwdriver and then was able to pull it out with my fingers. Cleaned the shaft, there was some calcium(?) buildup on the shaft which explained why the old bearing wore so much. Slid the new bearing into place, secured the new grub screws and then replaced the prop. The whole operation took about half an hour. Rob

Not sure on the setup of a SO 32. But no doubt the most difficult part is getting the propeller off. Mind you , not every cutless bearing comes out as easily as in Rob's (sitara) case. Sometime you just have to cut the bearing with a handsaw. That is done by many with a brass bearing. Be carefull not to damage the rest. Never use a hammer though , that can lead to a loose P-bracket. And believe me , by now I know everything there is to know about a P-bracket :-) If you want to do it right , it wouldn't hurt having a look on the hints and tips section . www.jeanneau-owners.com/hintsandtips/Cutlessbearingtool.htmlKind regards

So Sitara and flightdeck although it seems it may not be too difficult to get the bearing out it would be getting the shaft out that would be my main worry. Without the special tools Sailbleu used in his link how difficult is it. I take it you would disconnect the flange and pull out the shaft? Or am I being too simplistic. Thanks Ron

Ron, I did not have to remove the shaft. This was my big worry but on the 29.2 the cutlass bearing is held in place with two plastic grub screws. When these were removed it was possible to work the old bearing out. Then it was a matter of sliding the new bearing over the shaft and into the P-bracket. The clearances were sufficient for this to be done easily. Rob

Gents, Let's not scare the pants of rodgerg, I changed the cutlass on my SO32 at last slip. I surfed the net, made all kinds of tools ready for the BIG job and the hardest part was to "pop" the prop, you do need a puller of a sort for this. From there on just a matter of digging old anti-foul out of the slots on the plastic screws...1 one each side of the P-bracket, un-screw them, clean the shaft for any growth, after that you can pull / push the rubber only cutlass bearing out by hand. To fit new bearing is just as easy, all my "tools" and worry was just a waste of time and for the $20 or so for the bearing, why not replace it.

Thanks for the assistance, and horror stories! One point. I have got the new bearing and screws. I have arranged a loan of a prop puller, but which way does the nut on the end of the shaft loosen? Is it the normal anticlockwise or what? The current bearing is perhaps 1cm away from being hard up against the P bracket is that right? Ok I know thats two points.... Many thanks

From memory the nut on the propshaft of my SO 29.2 was removed anticlockwise. It was locked in place by a washer with one side bent up and a lug in the keyway so it would not rotate. There was also an anode attached to the end of the shaft.
The flange on the bearing was pushed right up to the P-bracket, but the location of the holes for the lockscrews should determine this. Good luck, and let us know how it goes

Well I am amazed but the prop popped off very easily with a puller once I had straightened out the washer I had a bit of a problem with one of the grub screws however did get both out. The old bearing came out so easily I did not need to apply much force a twist sideways and it slipped out over the shaft. I will clean up the prop before reassembling. Can anyone advise me there is some sort of sealant at the top of the P bracket where it goes through the hull. Does any one know what it is as I feel I should cut it back and reseal it but I don't think it's silkaflex seems like a putty hardish on the outer skin but spongy inside. Thanks
