I have just removed a worn out cutlass bearing from my 29.2, only to find out that it that the old one has brass sleeve. The replacement that i have bought is rubber, although dimensionally the same i am not happy with the fixing arrangement. Two nylon securing screws, has anyone replaced with the same bearing if so did you add any bonding agent for security ?

Hi Marmalade, I replaced our cutlass 12 months ago on our SO32, un-did the 2 nylon screws, pushed the rubber sleeve out by hand, cleaned up shaft, put new rubber (and it was all rubber) sleeve on, 2 new nylon screws.....done. I replaced it with original one send from UK.
Cheers

Hi Marmalade,
Same for me on my 37. The high quality brass ones are now getting increasingly hard to get hold of (if you haven't got a standard size). Apparently the new rubber ones are the way forward. However, it just stinks of cost reduction to me!!
But.... I will let you know how mine lasts!!
But on the good side - they are very very easy to fit and replace!!
Regards
Ian

I replaced the cutlass bearing (all rubber) on my SO 29.2 with the same unit 18 months ago and have no problems. Slipped the boat a couple of weeks ago and the bearing was fine. As flightdeck said, pushed the old bearing out by hand, cleaned up the shaft, slid the new one in and tightened the nylon grub screws. No need to remove the shaft.
Cheers Rob

I just replaced the cutlass bearing in my 29.2, it had plenty of wear, with a new rubber unit, very easy to remove and replace, makes servicing the unit very easy, but may need to be replaced every year.
