Jeanneau's price on performance Mylar sails is attractive, but I don't race. Should I consider this upgrade on a new 53?

Generally speaking, mylar sails are a bit lighter in wt than a dacron. SO in lighter winds they will also fill better, you will sail faster. They also do not stretch as much in higher winds, so you will still be powered up in higher winds, not heeling as much do to the sails stretching into a bad/worst shape as puffs occur.
The OTHER item you will want to upgrade if offered, is your lines. As the std Sta-set dacron lines will still stretch, so you will want a higher quality/less stretch sheet lines to go with the less stretch sails. Halyards should also be upgraded, but not as bad initially as the sheets. Do both if the option is there.
If you are looking at the "P"erformance pkg, I would get it. ALong with upgradeing the sails, lines are upgraded, you get line control genoa carrs. As you reef a genoa, you will need to move the carrs forward to keep the best sail shape. So you can pull on a line from the cockpit, or you can go forward on the lee side of the boat in BIG WINDS AND WAVES and manually push the carr forward! While the P pkg may seem to be for racers, reality is, it is a BETTER fit for cruisers IMHO, and should be the std pkg not the option for those that cruise!
