I'm thinking about perhaps getting a gennaker for my SO40 over the winter but I am not sure where I should locate the gennaker sheet blocks.
Deciding where to mount the pad eye for the blocks is made more challenging by the difficulty of access to the locations below deck for mounting the nut and washer. One thought is just to use the mooring cleat.
I am wondering how others have set-up their SO40 for a gennaker or spinnaker?

What kind of deck/hull joint railing do you have? if an aluminum with holes, place on the railing. Most spin blocks will be about the middle of the boat. At least that is where I put the ones for my AS.

anyone? On the 39i the spi sheave is located around 2 feet forward of the aft cleat. The aft cleat is likely to be stronger than the standard 3 bolt folding Wichard pad eye, so if you don't want to drill the the deck putting a strong webbing strop on the cleat to shackle the turning block to should work fine - IMHO

Marty, no holes in the toe rail. From what I have read here the toe rail is more for decoration than structural on the SO40 so that is not an option.
Webcrew. I suppose that using the cleat is probably the best thing to start with at least. Less destructive if I make a bad choice.

On most other boats I've had (and including my little Limbo 6.6 that we still race), the turning blocks are as far aft as possible. This does allow us to bring the chute around a long way without choking out the leach and disrupting flow through the slot.
On a cat that I sail also, we've made up a couple of strops to put on the mooring cleats and then have the sheet blocks made fast to these (the ones on the Limbo are lashed to the Pushpit stanchions).
I still haven't got around to getting a chute for our SO40, so can't say that this works, but should you try it before I get mine (currently way down on the to do list), I'd be keen to hear how you get on.
Cheers, PT.

Hello hoppy,
I faced the same challenge when I bought a gennaker for my 2004 SO35. I really did not want to drill more holes in my boat than necessary. So I'm also using the stern cleats to anchor my sheet blocks.
Rather than having nylon strops made up, I came across a pair of Axle Straps at my local automotive supply store. Just google "Axle Straps" and you'll see exactly what these things look like. The ones I bought are 2 feet in length, have a breaking strength of 2,000 lbs (which is more than plenty for my SO35) and cost me less than $20 for the pair.
Good luck,
John
