I've been servicing my winches, refreshing the grease and oil etc.. went below to inspect my steering systems lubrication. Can't seem to gain access to the wheel area inside the binnacle and figure that's a real hassle to lubricate that. I am interested in knowing about what kind of lubricant is used on the packing gland when you do the yearly inspect and lube job for that item. My manual says 1cm3...what is that? This is a 36.2 S/O 1997 vintage

I assume you have the Volvo rubber stuffing box. The recommendation is to grease it annually with about 1 cubic centimetre of Volvo stuffing box grease. An easy way to do this is to put the grease in the corner of a plastic bag, then cut the tip off the corner and insert it between the shaft and the seal. You can then squeeze the grease into the stuffing box. I do this when the boat is out of the water for its annual antifoul.

Okay, that looks like good information. I'm in SF Bay Area will inspect my packing gland and trot on down to KKMI in Richmond and see if I can buy the proper grease from them.
