I wish to add a pair of winches for use with spinnaker or potentially German mainsheet system. How much reinforcing under the cockpit coaming is required? Anyone had experience with doing this?

Hi, I changed the primary winches on my 36i last winter, upgrading to Harken Radial 46ST. I also added further turning blocks by stacking a harken turning block with integral jammer undrneath the originals. I can lock off the genoa sheet while using the winch for the Spinnaker sheet, although the latter can be taken to the halyard winch if necessary.I considered reusing the original primaries as additional winches mounted on the coamings but eventually decided against it foe three reasons: 1) the injected deck is by my reckoning only about 10mm thick at that point, and whilst most of the stress will be in shear I was not confident I would not need a substantial backing plate 2) linked to (1) I was wary of putting more ironwork on the deckhead in the aft cabin to give myself something else to bash my head on; and 3) The deck has a compound curve that would have required some fancy work to create a chamfered pad to take the winch base, either in Iroko or Epoxy paste.
Instead I sold my original winches to a work colleague of my son for a decent price.

gjwilliams, I would back up the deck with an aluminum plate 1/8th" to 1/4" thick. Use clear silicone to prevent leaks in the holes you drill and use washers and lock washers as well. Bolts should be 1/4 x 20 with flat head not round head. Good Luck. Happy Sailing, mkremedy
